altAre You Game Ready?
During the 2007-08 academic year, the Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics launched a new student-athlete directed initiative entitled “Are You Game Ready?” The purpose of this program is to instill the qualities of preparation, dedication and accountability in all student-athletes at Stevens.

What does it take to be Game Ready? Quite simply, that can mean any number of things ranging from performance in the classroom to that in athletic competition. It can also signify a readiness to develop yourself both personally and in your chosen career path. Basically, being Game Ready factors into all avenues of life at Stevens and beyond.

Throughout the year, Stevens Athletics will be sponsoring a number of events to promote being Game Ready. These programs will include speakers coming to campus to discuss a wide range of topics, including drug and alcohol abuse, mental preparedness and diversity awareness.

In addition, the department will work closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to find creative ways to address issues affecting all student-athletes. Furthermore, Stevens Athletics is going to make a concerted effort to give back to the local community through a number of excellent programs run through each varsity team.

The Stevens Game Ready initiative is a direct reflection of the Institute’s involvement with the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, which focuses on the five fundamental commitments of academic excellence, athletic excellence, career development, personal development and service.

What is the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program?
The mission of the NCAA is to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the campus education program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. With this in mind, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success) was created to support the student-athlete initiatives of NCAA member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the context of higher education.

In the process of achieving this mission, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program will:
  1. Promote student-athletes’ ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities.
  2. Meet the changing needs of student-athletes.
  3. Promote respect for diversity and inclusion among student-athletes.
  4. Assist student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills.
  5. Enhance partnerships between the NCAA, member institutions and their communities for the purpose of education.
  6. Foster an environment that encourages student-athletes to effectively access campus resources.
  7. Encourage the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.
To this end, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and Stevens Institute of Technology believe in:
  1. The total development of the student-athlete in each of the following areas:
    1. Academic Excellence – to support the academic programs of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.
    2. Athletic Excellence – to build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete.
    3. Career Development – to encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals.
    4. Personal Development – to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills.
    5. Service – to engage the student-athlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities.
  1. Promoting a balanced experience for the student-athlete within the university environment and surrounding community.
  2. Providing an environment that promotes the development of values clarification, goal setting and responsible decision-making.
  3. Providing an environment of proactive programming rather than reactive intervention.
  4. Continual evaluation and support of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program at member institutions.
