INTRAMURAL FLOOR HOCKEY RULES AND REGULATIONS
Rule #1: The Players
Section 1.1: Floor Hockey consists of four players on the court at one time, three court players plus a goalie.
Section 1.2: Only 8 players per team are eligible for play during a game. You are allowed as many people as you want on a team roster, but only up to 8 people can be in the ATC when play begins.
Section 1.3: Teams will be allowed to start and continue with no less than three players.
Section 1.4: No substitutions are allowed for any player in the penalty box.
Rule #2: Equipment
Section 2.1: The IM-REC Sports department will supply all goalie equipment except for the blocker.
Section 2.2: The IM-REC Supervisor and game officials, prior to the start of the game, must approve all equipment.
Section 2.3: Gloves, kneepads, and shin guards are allowed.
Rule #3: Time Regulations
Section 3.1: The game shall consist of three periods of 10 minutes each, running time. There shall be a one-minute break between periods. The clock will stop on each whistle in the last one minute of the third and overtime periods.
Section 3.2: During the regular season, if the game is tied at the end of regulation, a five-minute sudden death overtime period will be held. If that period ends with the score tied, then the match ends in a draw. In the playoffs, if the game is tied at the end of regulation, the teams play a sudden death overtime period until one team scores.
Section 3.3: Each team is allowed one time outs per game.
Rule #4: Fouls & Penalties
Section 4.1: There are two types of fouls/penalties in the Floor Hockey League:
Section 4.2: Running Fouls are fouls that occur when a player violates the game.
1. Raising the stick over the crossbar and touching the ball
2. Goalie throwing the puck forward
3. Offensive player in the crease
4. Batting the puck forward with the hand
5. Kicking the puck into the net
Section 4.3: Roughing fouls are actions by the players that involve illegal contact or rule infractions that are detrimental to the game. A roughing foul is penalized by a 2 minute penalty to the offending player. That penalized player must serve his/her time in the penalty box and may not be substituted.
1. If the goalie commits a roughing foul, any player who was on the court from that team, at the time of the foul must serve the penalty for the goalie.
2. If the opposition scores against a team that is shorthanded due to a roughing penalty, then the penalized player may resume playing.
Section 4.4:
Roughing fouls include:
• Tripping • Pushing • Charging
• Body Check/Trip • Hooking • Elbowing
• Slashing • Interference • Holding
• Bench Penalty • Deliberate delay of game
• Holding the stick • Touching an opponent with the stick above the waist
Misconduct fouls include:
• Disrespect to an official or Supervisor • Actions that can or do incite a fight
• Excessive profanity • Abuse of facility or equipment
Section 4.5: Fighting is a 10 minute misconduct penalty with ejection of the offending player. The offending team will be shorthanded for the entire 10 minutes.
Section 4.6: All misconduct penalties except fighting shall be five minutes long and possible ejection of the offending player(s).
Section 4.7: Any player with 3 fouls (combination of roughing and misconduct) will be ejected.
Section 4.8: Throwing the stick will result in a penalty shot.
Rule #5: Playing the Puck
Section 5.1: No offensive player is allowed in the crease, regardless of where the puck is.
Section 5.2: Players must play the puck at all times. Both hands must be kept on the stick.
Rule #6: Starting the game and Scoring
Section 6.1:Each game starts with a center ice face-off. All players must be on the defending side of the floor.
Section 6.2: Every time a whistle blows for a dead ball, the ball will be put back in play by the team that last had possession.
Section 6.3: A goal is scored when the ball enters the net and the offensive team has no penalties during play. A goal can be scored from anywhere on the floor. After a goal the defending team will take possession of the ball. Play will begin when the goal scoring team is set on their side of the court.
Rule #7: Goalkeeping
Section 7.1: The goalie may use any means to stop the ball with the body, gloves and stick.
Section 7.2: The goalie cannot throw the puck towards the offensive zone.
Rule #8: Penalty Shots
Section 8.1: The penalty shot is one on the goalie opportunity for an offensive player.
Section 8.2: Penalty shots result from:
1. A player throwing his stick
2. A player being fouled on a breakaway.
Section 8.3: During the penalty shot, the ball is placed at center ice and the player has one shot at the goalie. The penalty shot ends with a goal, save, or wide shot.
Section 8.4: After the penalty shot, play resumes with the defending team taking possession.
