PROGRAM ORIENTATION

Schaefer Conference Room
9 - 11 p.m.
Students will be introduced to the various trips offered during the fall semester. Participants will have the opportunity to register for the trips they desire. Physical Education students are required to pay the course fee at this time and choose at least three trips to attend to receive credit.
Information will be provided about each trip which will include time, date and meeting location as well as equipment and clothing requirements.
Students will also complete all trip-related forms and the rules of the program will be covered. Please bring a pad and pen to the meeting.
CANOEING

Delaware River in New York and Pennsylvania
Typically, the canoeing trip will take place on the Delaware River from Pond Eddy, N.Y. to Matamoras, Pa. The length is about nine miles and depending on the water level, Class I and II rapids may be encountered.
No experience is required. Participants will be issued life vests, paddles and canoes. Instruction will include proper paddle techniques, safety procedures and the use of river signals.
KAYAKING

Delaware River, N.Y.
The kayaking trip will take place on the Delaware River in the same location as the canoe trip. Kayaking requires different skills from canoeing, especially with the use of the kayaking paddle. Also, students will be issued their own kayak as opposed to the canoe trip where the canoes were shared. Again, paddle, life vest and kayak will be provided. No experience is required. Students will be given instruction on paddling, safety and the use of river signals.
ROCK CLIMBING

Shawangunks, N.Y.
The rock climbing trip takes place at the world famous Shawangunks in New York. Learn proper climbing techniques which will enable you to ascent the 60-80 foot cliff that we will be climbing. The basic use of belay equipment will be covered as well as proper belay commands. No experience is required. Students will be issued climbing shoes, harness and helmet.
MOUNTAIN BIKING

Minnewaska State Park, N.Y.
Experience the extreme sport of mountain biking. Each trip is limited to 10 people. All participants must be comfortable and have recent experience riding a bicycle. If you have not been on a bicycle in over three years and wish to go on the mountain bike trip, you may sign out one of the mountain bikes some time before the trip to reacquaint yourself with riding. The trails circle Lake Minnewaska and Lake Awosting as well as cliff tops with extraordinary views of the Catskill Mountains.
Students will be provided with mountain bikes and helmets or are welcome to bring their own. Helmets are required if you bring your own bike.
RAPPELLING

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
Find yourself atop a 60-foot cliff with incredible views of the Delaware Valley. Students will learn and experience the use and operation of various rappelling devices. No experience is required. Students will be provided with harness and helmet.
HIKING

Harriman State Park, N.Y.
Only 45 minutes away from campus, Harriman State Park has 31 lakes and reservoirs as well as 200 miles of hiking trails. The hiking route selected may depend on weather conditions and the size of the group. The hike tends to be between six and eight miles long. Students will be introduced to basic route-finding skills and reading a topographical map.
