Outdoor Leadership
Outdoor Leadership was developed to introduce students to the unique skills associated with outdoor adventure. Students will become familiar with terminology, proper equipment, practical use of maps, compass and other equipment to enjoy outdoor adventure trips in a safe and comfortable manner.

The class will be eight, 60-minute classroom sessions and one outdoor day trip. |
| Session 1 |
Students will be introduced to the four types of leadership styles. |
| Session 2 |
Students will identify the parts of a topographical map (contour lines, contour intervals, ridges, valleys and conversion scales). Students will complete a topographical worksheet, conversion problems and route finding. |
| Session 3 |
Students will identify weather systems, cloud formations, cloud types and their meaning as they pertain to decision-making skills during an outdoor trip. |
| Session 4 |
Students will learn how to choose, plan and prepare for an outdoor adventure trip. Students will determine essential and non-essential items for specific trips, develop a checklist; select the proper equipment and safety precautions. |
| Session 5 |
Students will be introduced to various decision-making models and review case study scenarios. Students will participate in role-playing scenarios. |
| Session 6 |
Students will be introduced to various decision-making models and review case study scenarios. Students will participate in role-playing scenarios. |
| Session 7 |
Students will prepare an emergency response plan and act out different emergency scenarios. Students will identify their leadership style and provide explanations for the course of action they chose. |
| Session 8 |
Students will identify the "Leave No Trace" principles through various activities covering camping on durable surfaces, low use areas, human waste disposal, food waste and trash, minimize campfire impact, respect wildlife and be considerate to other campers. |
| Day Trip |
Students will be given a topographical map of the area and determine their location, then using a compass, find their way to another pre-determined location. Each student will have the opportunity to lead the group and demonstrate his or her skill as an outdoor leader. After lunch, students will demonstrate at least one "Leave No Trace" skill. |
