2010-2011

Sep 13, 2011, Hoboken, NJ
On Tuesday September 13, Stevens Ultimate hosted St. John's University for its first home game of the season. Right from the offset of the game, it was clear that Stevens is on a mission this season. Through a combination of tough defense and precise offensive motion, Stevens took a solid first half lead, going into halftime up 8-3. The team kept up the pressure in the second half and continued to break down the St. John's defense. The highlight of the game was a sensational layout near the back of the endzone by Chris Fairfield. Eventually, Stevens Ultimate took the game 15-6. Leading scorer was Junior Chris Fairfield, and Junior Khalifi Rahman forced the most turnovers.

May 7,8th, 2011, Metro East Division III Regional Tournament
This weekend, Stevens Ultimate took part in the Metro East Division III Regional Tournament, which they qualified for two weeks ago at the conference championships. The winner of this weekend’s tournament would earn a trip to the National tournament of just the top 16 Division III schools in the country. Stevens Ultimate entered the weekend seeded 5th overall, and would play in a pool with Rensselaer Polytechnic, Ithaca, and Hamilton on Saturday, and then in Bracket play on Sunday.

The first opponent for Stevens was Rensselaer, the top seed in the pool. Last year, RPI went to Nationals, and were set on repeating this year. They played very clean offense, committing just two turnovers in the first half, and put enormous pressure on the Stevens defense. The barrage was too much for Stevens to handle at first, and they found themselves with a serious deficit at half time. Stevens began to rally in the second half, led in scoring by sophomore captain Chris Fairfield, who scored all 6 of Stevens scores, five of which came after half. RPI won the game 15-6.

Next up for Stevens was a team that they had never played before, Hamilton. Both teams got off to a hot start, and matched each score 1 for 1 until 4-4. After this, the Stevens offense really began to take hold, and scored four in a row to take half at 8-4. From there, Stevens never let off the effort and continued to shred the defense of the other team, and effectively stop their advances, allowing just four more points in the second half. Stevens won the game 15-8. Chris Fairfield led the scoring with six, and junior Captain Zack Zaorski led the assists with five. Great defensive efforts were put up by sophomore Captain Andrew Misthos, Ed Hoffman, and Chris Fairfield, each with two forced turnovers.

The final opponent on Saturday was Ithaca, another team that Stevens had never met before. By this time, the fatigue had begun to set in, and the offense was not quite as effective as the previous game. Again led in scoring by Chris Fairfield, with five, the team managed just three more, for a total of eight. The tiring previous games also showed on defense, but promising freshman Jon Lee managed a beautiful layout D to that prevented Ithaca from scoring and extending the game, allowing Stevens more time to try to close the gap. In the end, the lead was insurmountable, and Stevens dropped the game, 15-8. This closed pool play, but with three teams tied with a record of 1-3, the seeding for Sunday’s bracket came down to head to head point differential. Stevens managed to hold on to third in the pool, with RPI and Ithaca above them, and Hamilton below.

Sunday began with Stevens facing the third seed of the other pool, conference rival Rider University, who Stevens had beaten twice two weeks prior at the conference championship. Entering the game with the confidence inspired by the recent wins, Stevens pulled out to a strong lead, going up 6-0 to start the game. The team looked great with intense play on both sides of the disc. On offense, eleven different players scored for Stevens. Contributions by many players could also be seen on the defensive end, with seven different players forcing turnovers. In the end, Stevens won 15-5, and earned a place in the Semifinals.

The team that they would face was the same RPI team that beat Stevens Ultimate with relative ease the day before. This was not the case in this game, as Stevens managed to stay within one point of the opponent all the way until the score was 10-9 in favor of RPI. At that point, RPI realized that their season was on the line and really turned up the pressure, scoring three straight points. Stevens responded with a point of their own, and played solid defense, but could not contain the surge put on by the much more experienced team, eventually losing 15-10. Junior Captain Mason Compton commended the team on one of the hardest fought games that he had ever seen, and reminded the team to carry that intensity into the next game, which would be for third place overall in the region.

The final game of the day would be a rematch of the final game from the previous day against Ithaca. Not wanting to repeat the result from yesterday, Stevens battled as hard as possible. There was intense play from both teams, but the determination from Stevens was clearly evident, as they never let up the pressure. Unwilling to allow a repeat of the previous day, Chris Fairfield stretched the field multiple times, and caught several full field passes from handlers Zack Zaorski, Andrew Misthos, and Mason Compton. One especially beautiful pass was from Jon Lee to Mason Compton that was at least 60 yards, and was thrown so perfectly that Mason did not even break his stride to catch it for a score. The Stevens offense began to take control of the game and the defense did an excellent job of containing the opponent’s efforts. By playing well on both sides of the disc, Stevens managed to beat Ithaca by a comfortable margin of 15-8.

In doing so, Stevens managed a very respectable third place in the Metro East Division III region, which had a total of 24 teams. This tournament concluded Stevens Ultimate’s season, but the team will be back in action again in the fall. The results for this season’s tournaments were 3rd place at Fairmount Open, 8th place at Garden State Open, 4th place at the Metro NY conference championship, and 3rd place at the Metro East Regionals.

April 16-17, 2011, Lawrenceville, NJ - Metro NY Division III
This past weekend, Stevens Ultimate traveled to Lawrenceville, NJ to play in the Metro NY Division III Conference championship tournament. Saturday consisted of pool play between all of the teams, and Sunday was bracket play. Two bids to Division I regionals and up to 4 bids to Division III regionals were awaiting the teams at the end of the weekend.

First up for Stevens was the top seeded College of New Jersey team who entered the tournament as the 23rd seed DIII school in the country. Despite a strong showing, Stevens could not topple the experience of the opponents, and fell 13-8.

As the rain began to fall lightly, Stevens faced the host team, Rider University. The team started off strong and seemed to be affected less by the rain than the opponents. The team took a commanding half time lead of 7-2, and used the second half as an opportunity to work on their defense system. The new strategy worked as planned, and shut out the opponent in the second half, bringing Stevens to a convincing 13-2 win.

Next came Princeton, a team that Stevens had beaten at the last tournament. Princeton held a higher overall ranking in the country, at 40th overall, but Stevens was determined to beat them again. As the first half ended, the rain began to fall even harder, and changed the dynamic of the game. Stevens was down 7-5 at half time, but put up a strong fight after half and stayed within two points until the end of the game, eventually falling 13-10.

The final game of the first day was against Ramapo. By this time, the fields were fully saturated and the rain had a huge affect on quality of play. Stevens got off to a great start, taking a 4-0 lead, with three straight scores from Chris Fairfield, all assisted by Andew Misthos. After that, the conditions further declined to the point where it was nearly impossible to play. Despite the hot start, Stevens Ultimate slipped back and allowed Ramapo to score 7 straight points. At that point, the conditions were deemed too adverse to continue, and the game was cut short.

After the first day, the seeding were recalculated, and Stevens was once again in the #3 spot. The first game on Sunday was against Rider. A win here meant that Stevens would secure a bid to regionals, and that extra motivation showed in the play. Stevens fought a tough headwind to score unwind three times, and every other point in the game was scored in the downwind endzone. Stevens won the game 13-7, successfully clinching a bid to Division III regionals for the first time in team history.

The final game was against Princeton, and was merely a formality as both teams had already secured bids to move on in the college series. Stevens Ultimate had a lot of fun with this game, but never really stressed too much over the result. In what turned out to be one of the best games of the tournament, Stevens held a lead for much of the first half, surprising Princeton, who had expected not to have to play hard. Eventually, the reality of being shorthanded for most of the weekend showed, and fatigue caught up with many key players. This allowed Princeton to utilize their extremely deep roster and capitalize on the tired Stevens defense, on their way to a 14-9 win.

Stevens Ultimate will be back in action in Princeton, NJ for the Metro East Division III regional tournament on April 30-May 1.

April 2-3, 2011, Mercerville, NJ - Garden State Open
On the weekend of April 2-3, Stevens Ultimate travelled to Mercerville, NJ to take part in the Garden State Open. Stevens played in a pool with Drexel, Princeton, Bowdoin, Marist, and SUNY Stonybrook in order to be seeded for Sunday's championship bracket.

Stevens Ultimate's first opponent was long time rival Marist. Facing a stiff wind, Stevens quickly found themselves with a pair of unwind break points. Strong defense from Austin Chung and Mason Compton allowed Stevens to hang onto the lead, eventually winning 13-10.

Next up for Stevens Ultimate was SUNY Stonybrook, a team that Stevens had never faced before. The team put together a spectacle on offense; David Johnston and Jimmy Coyne each had three assists, and Chris Fairfield had four scores. Great offense, backed up by unflappable defense allowed Stevens to cruise to victory, 13-3.

The third game of the day was against conference rival Princeton. The last meeting between these two teams was at Princeton in the fall, where Stevens was defeated 13-4. Hoping to avenge the loss, Stevens played inspired ultimate, giving up nothing to the deeper and more established Princeton team. The game went back and forth, with neither team leading by more than two at any point in the game. Stevens Ultimate put together a great showing on offense: Mason Compton led with four assists; Andrew Misthos and Zack Zaorski had three assists each. Chris Fairfield put on a show and had a season high eight scores, including a great catch for the final score, which clinched the game for Stevens in extra time. Stevens won the hard fought game 12-11. The team was ecstatic to have achieved one of the main goals for the season in defeating Princeton.

The final game of Saturday was against Drexel, the top seed in the pool. Despite strong offense from Zack Zaorski and Chris Fairfield, with four assists and four scores, respectively, Stevens Ultimate was not able to overcome the onslaught of a very strong Drexel team.

On Sunday morning, Stevens faced the final game of pool play against Bowdoin. The opponent quickly proved to be incredibly efficient at playing in the wind, and had only 2 unforced turnovers in the first half. Despite solid strategy, and good energy, Stevens was unable to counter the attacks of the opponent and took a loss to Bowdoin. At the conclusion of pool play, Stevens had a record of 3-2 and was reseeded 3rd in the pool, despite a starting seed of 6th.

The next opponent for Stevens was Bloomsburg, the fourth place team from the other pool. Stevens managed to force seventeen turnovers, but had trouble converting those into scores because of solid defense from Bloomsburg. Eventually, the lack of offense caught up to the team, and resulted in a Stevens loss, 7-13.

The final opponent of the weekend was Lehigh. Stevens got off to a bit of a slow start, and allowed a few easy scores in the first half. In the second half, Stevens turned up the defense, led by Zack Zaorski, with four forced turnovers. Chris Fairfield led the scoring, with five, allowing Stevens to come back within reach of the opponents, but unfortunately it was not quite enough. The Lehigh defense, notably led by a 7’1” ex-basketball center, held strong, and allowed only eight points. Stevens eventually lost 8-13.

Stevens Ultimate will be back in action for the conference championships on the weekend of April 16-17 at Rider University. The winner there will be headed to represent the Metro New York conference at Metro East Regionals in Princeton, NJ on April 30-May 1.

March 26-27, 2011, Philadelphia, PA - Fairmount Open 2011
On the weekend of March 26 and 27, Stevens Ultimate travelled to Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, PA, to play in the Fairmount Open 2011. Stevens Ultimate entered the weekend seeded 8th in a field of 10 teams.

Pool play occurred on Saturday, with Stevens facing Villanova, University of Pennsylvania-B, Philadelphia University, and Dickinson University. Battling near freezing conditions, and a stiff wind, Stevens Ultimate lost to Villanova 13-8 despite solid offensive performances by sophomore Chris Fairfield and junior Zack Zaorski. Next, Stevens Ultimate faced UPenn-B. Chris Fairfield and Zack Zaorski, led the team to victory with four scores each, on the way to a comfortable victory 13-4.

Immediately following the victory, Stevens faced Philadelphia University. Despite going in to half time down 7-1, Stevens fought back to tie the game at 11-11. Chris Fairfield and freshman Jon Lee led the team with 6 scores and 5 assists, respectively. Despite the emotional comeback, Stevens lost the game 13-11. The final game of the first day had Stevens facing the eventual champions, Dickinson University, a powerhouse team ranked among the top 50 in the country. In spite of the fatigue of already having played three games earlier in the day and the tough adversary, Stevens Ultimate put up a strong fight, but eventually succumbed to the overwhelming pressure put on by a very skilled Dickinson team.

After the first day, Stevens Ultimate found themselves with a record of 1-3, despite never being severely out-played. Based on the pool play, Stevens was re-seeded sixth. This meant playing 3rd seeded Villanova for a spot in the final four. Having lost the previous day's game to Villanova, the team started the game motivated to win, and quickly jumped out to a comfortable lead. A strong defensive presence, led by senior Ed Hoffman and sophomore Andrew Misthos, allowed Stevens to hold a considerable score margin for the rest of the game, eventually winning 15-10.
By winning that game, Stevens found themselves in the final four, facing the tournament host, St. Joseph's University for a spot in the final. This game was the hardest fought of the weekend, and despite never holding a lead, Stevens put up a great defensive effort, and helped to keep the game within reach until the last few points. The host team played impenetrable defense, and held Stevens to just 9 points, for a final score of 15-9.

The last game of the day was played for 3rd place overall in the tournament, with Stevens facing Fordham University. After battling hard all weekend, the players were exhausted, but managed to overcome it and put on a spectacular showing on offense. Led in scoring by junior Dale Dombrowski and junior Jinmyon Coyne with 2 scores each, Stevens finished the game winning 10-5. In this game, eight different players scored, with assists thrown by 5 different throwers.
By winning this game, Stevens Ultimate took 3rd in the tournament, and broke seed considerably. A few players who played especially well over the course of the weekend were sophomores Khalifi Abdull Rahman, Matt Marano and freshman Jon Lee.

The team will be back in action again on the weekend of April 2-3, in the Garden State Open in Ewing, NJ.

Oct 13-14, Princeton, NJ - Tournament
The Stevens Ultimate team played in Princeton this weekend, in a pool of 30 open teams. Our opponents on Saturday included Blueprint, an elite New Jersey club team. Devyl, last year's U19 club National Champions, Cornell-B, and Princeton. The team worked to develop our new players, and unfortunately we suffered losses in all of the games on Saturday. The scores were (5-13) against Blueprint, (5-13) against Devyl, (9-13) against Cornell-B, and (3-13) against Princeton who finished second overall.

The second day of the tournament was played against Pennsylvania-X, Princeton-B, and Scranton. We went 2-1, losing to Pennsyvania (12-13), and beating Princeton (13-12) and Scranton (13-9).

The team played very well together, and conditions were perfect for the middle of November. Jon Lee and Austin Chung, both freshmen, stepped up and played roles usually filled by more veteran members of the team. Sophomore Chris Fairfield notched his 100th score of the season, and Junior Mason Compton recorded his 50th assist on the season.

This tournament concludes our fall season, next week begins our off-season work to prepare for the spring. Stevens Ultimate will compete in several tournaments in the spring, hopefully concluding in a successful playoff run.
