November 12-13, Fall Brawl III, Mercerville, NJ
This weekend, Stevens Ultimate travelled to Mercerville, NJ for Fall Brawl III. Stevens entered the weekend seeded 1st in the pool and 2nd overall. Saturday consisted of pool play in order to establish seeding for bracket play on Sunday.
The first game was against Lehigh-B. Stevens started off strong and took a commanding 7-3 lead by half time. The dominance continued into the second half, with Austin Chung, Chris Fairfield, Jon Lee, and Mason Compton each having two or more scores. Our offensive line went the entire game without being scored on, and our defensive line cemented the win with 4 upwind break points. In the end, Stevens won 13-5. The next game was against regional-rival Ithaca. Junior Captain Chris Fairfield led the scoring attack with 6 scores, while Senior Dan Richards and Sophomore Austin Chung each forced two turnovers. Again, the offensive line game up no points and the defense came up with a few crucial upwind points, leading to a final score of 13-8 in favor of Stevens. The next game was against Bard College. This game became a huge battle against the wind, where just a point or two upwind would be enough to win. As it turns out, Stevens adapted particularly well to the wind, scoring 3 breaks upwind. The offensive line let up just two breaks in this game, and the defensive line did a great job of preventing Bard from scoring. Junior Captain Chris Fairfield and Freshman Nick Raguseo led the scoring with two each, with Junior Captain Andrew Misthos leading assists with three. In the end, Stevens won 13-8. The final game of Saturday was against SUNY: Stonybrook. By this time, darkness was setting in, and the game was definitely affected by it. The game was dominated by the Stevens offensive unit, allowing just one break, and scoring most of their points without any turnovers. The defense held up their end of the game, forcing many turnovers, led by Sophomore Austin Chung, and scoring 3 breaks. The game ended in favor of Stevens, 13-9. The final game of pool play was on Sunday morning against an undefeated Franklin and Marshall team. With a win, Stevens Ultimate would secure its first undefeated pool play, and sole possession of first place in the pool. Rising to the occasion was the entire defensive line; Senior Seung-Kook Burns led with 4 scores, and Sophomore Jon Lee led assists with 5. Senior Mason Compton had a season high three hand blocks. Because of the great defense, the offense hardly ever took the field, but when they did, they scored with surgical precision. They allowed no breaks, and had only three turnovers. In the end, Stevens had their largest margin of victory of the weekend, winning 13-4.
Going into the Championship bracket undefeated and in first place allowed Stevens to advance directly to the semifinals in a rematch against Ithaca. Both teams put in a great effort, but Stevens especially rose to the occasion. Junior Captain Chris Fairfield led the scoring with 4 points, while Senior Captain Zack Zaorski led with 5 assists. The defense did a great job to prevent the long game that had worked for Ithaca against other teams, and forced them to make many short throws into the wind, leading to lots of turnovers in Stevens favor. It was a very close game until the end when Stevens began to walk away with the game, finally winning 15-10, advancing to the teams second tournament finals of the fall season.
The championship game was against an also undefeated Lehigh team, and would turn out to be one of the most intense games that any of the players had ever been in. On the first play of the game, the Stevens offense allowed a break, and immediately put Stevens at a disadvantage. Despite that, the offense came out and earned the break back immediately and then got to work to try to get an advantage over Lehigh. The wind played as a great equalizer in this game, and neither team could get much going upwind. Through the game, the offense allowed two more breaks, and gave the defense a lot of work to do in order to get back into the game. Due to a deep roster, the Stevens players were able to give everything they had to the game, and managed to come from behind to even the score at 12-12. At this point, Stevens scored one more time, and brought the game to what could have been the last point. The Lehigh players had just as much to play for as Stevens, and managed to tie the game at 14. Leading to universe point: whoever scored that point would win the game. Despite their best efforts, Stevens gave up this point, losing to Lehigh, taking 2nd place overall in Fall Brawl III.
October 15-16, 2011, "Showdown" tournament, Newark, NJ
The Stevens Ultimate team traveled to Newark, Delaware to compete in the University of Delaware’s "Showdown” tournament. 20 men’s teams were in attendance, hailing from 14 different colleges. There were a number of big names at the tournament, including Cornell who attended D-1 college nationals last year. Stevens was one of only two D-III teams at the tournament, so competition was very stiff.
The first game played on Saturday was against a tough opponent, Millersville University. They are a respected D-1 school with an established program. Stevens played their best game in windy conditions, eventually succumbing to a loss at a score of 15-6.
Drexel’s squad, which is quickly becoming a rival of the team, was Stevens’ second opponent. The match was very contentious, with many close calls and quite a few spectacular plays. Despite the windy conditions, Freshman Marquez Brownlee was able to throw many long pulls upwind to put a damper on Drexel’s offensive efforts. Stevens fell behind Drexel at a score of 12-9, but was able to come back to tie the score at 12-12 by using a very effective zone defense. Unfortunately, the game ran too long, and was capped at 13, so when Stevens gave up the thirteenth point, Drexel was victorious.
Stevens lost a third game to one of Delaware’s teams. Stevens was outmatched and lost 15-8.
In the final match on Saturday, Stevens was able to chalk up their first win, beating Catholic University by a score of 15-8.
On Sunday, Stevens was placed in the consolation bracket, competing for Ninth place against similarly skilled teams. Hofstra was the first game, which Stevens won handily, by a score of 15-5. In previous years, Hofstra had been dominant over Stevens, but now the team has a very firm hold over the Hofstra Dutchmen.
The second game on Sunday was played against Johns Hopkins University. The wind picked up, so Stevens again threw a zone defense. JHU’s primary player was able to effortlessly throw through the defense, but Stevens was eventually able to overcome this and win by a score of 15-10. Freshman Marquez Brownlee threw an astounding seven assists, while Junior David Johnston had four scores in this game.
The last game, to decide the winner of the consolation bracket, was against TCNJ’s team. TCNJ, who is in the same conference as Stevens, easily defeated the Ducks earlier this year in the college series. In this tournament, the score was much different. Although Stevens lost the game 16-14, the Ducks outplayed TCNJ for the large majority of the game, showing skill and dominance against an opponent who will be seen again. TCNJ was able to pull off a tremendous comeback at the very end of the game, scoring six unanswered points.
Stevens ended the tournament with a record of 3-4, leading scorer was Junior Chris Fairfield, with 22 points on the weekend. Freshman Marquez Brownlee led in assists, with a total 26. Standout defenders include Junior Kaka Abdull, Senior Jinmyon Coyne, and Sophomore Jon Lee. The team will be on a break from tournament play until the second week of November.
Sep 13, 2011, Hoboken, NJ
On Tuesday September 13, Stevens Ultimate hosted St. John's University for its first home game of the season. Right from the offset of the game, it was clear that Stevens is on a mission this season. Through a combination of tough defense and precise offensive motion, Stevens took a solid first half lead, going into halftime up 8-3. The team kept up the pressure in the second half and continued to break down the St. John's defense. The highlight of the game was a sensational layout near the back of the endzone by Chris Fairfield. Eventually, Stevens Ultimate took the game 15-6. Leading scorer was Junior Chris Fairfield, and Junior Khalifi Rahman forced the most turnovers.
