 2010-2011

February 12, 2011, Prudential Center, Newark, NJ
Stevens Club Ice Hockey played their last game of the season versus St. Thomas on Saturday. The game started out with St. Thomas taking a small lead. Stevens quickly closed the gap and the game remained neck and neck. Stevens saw a huge fan turnout for our last game of the season and this was the game to watch.
Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep) scored 3 amazing goals (one in each period). The game came down to the last 5 minutes with the score STAC-8 Stevens-7. Coach Dillion Wu along with new assistant coach Erick Musé decided to pull Kamil Scorz (Clifton, NJ/ Clifton) out of goal in an attempt to score. St. Thomas received 2 penalties in the last 5 minutes, but they held on. The final score stood at STAC-8 Stevens-7. Stevens finished the season 7th in the league with a record of 5-10-0. The team and the fans look ahead to next season.

Away for the second time in one weekend Stevens skated against Maritime on Saturday. Steven’s roster was similar to Friday’s with a limited number of skaters. Stevens played at 100% for 3 periods, but two lines of skaters are limited in their stamina. Stevens finished off the game at Maritime- 8 Stevens- 1. Stevens plays their last game of the season home this Saturday Feb 12, 2011 at 7:30pm.

February 4, 2010, Mid-Hundson Arena, Poughkeppsie, NY

Stevens played away this Friday to face off against S.U.N.Y. - New Paltz, in Poughkeepsie. Enduring a long bus ride and a limited number of players, the team showed sportsmanship. Stevens played with only 11 skaters and one goalie. Playing New Paltz with a full bench was expertly a challenge which was evident after the end of the first period. Jake Lovelace showed amazing skill in the second period breaking New Paltz’s defense to shoot on goal. The Ducks show athleticism and sportsmanship as they finished out the game with the final score at New Platz- 13 Stevens- 4.

January 29, 2010, Prudential Center , Newark, NJ
Stevens played CCM for the second time this season extremely short staffed, having only 12 dressed players for this game. Stevens was still able to pull together two forward lines and two defensive lines. CCM was on their game after their narrow loss the last time Stevens faced off against them. Rotating their lines CCM brought the score to 2-16 at the end of the second period invoking a running third period. Stevens Came back with two goals shot by Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep), but there was no way to narrow the 12 goal lead any further with the final score Stevens-4 CCM-16. Stevens is away this weekend playing S.U.N.Y., New Paltz (2/4/11) and Maritime (2/5/11).

January 22, 2010, Prudential Center , Newark, NJ
The Ducks faced off against Long Island’s New Paltz for the first time this season. The Ducks were able to hold off New Paltz for a majority of the first period, but with a smaller roster New Paltz was able to out skate the Ducks. New Paltz went on to score 4 times in the first period. Stevens returned 1 goal in the second period shot by Jake Lovelace (Wantagh, NY/) and assisted by Eric Yando (Baldwinsville, NY/ Baldwinsville). The final score stands at Stevens-1 New Paltz-7 with Stevens taking only one penalty this game. The Ducks face off against CCM for the second time this season this Saturday Jan 29, 2011 4:30pm at Home (Prudential Center Newark, NJ) with a 5-7 season record.

December 5, 2010, War Memorial, Staten Island, NY
Stevens Ice Hockey took on the Wagner College Seahawks for the second time this season. The Ducks came out with a bang with Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep) scoring 1 minute and 24 seconds into the game. The Seahawks came back later in the first and tied the score at 1-1. The tie did not last for long when Hartt scored his second goal of the game giving the Ducks a 2-1 advantage entering the 2nd. The only goal in the 2nd period came from Wagner making the game a 2-2 tie. The 3rd saw Stevens allow 2 unanswered goals before getting one of their own again from Hartt for his 3rd of the game. Wagner struck back with a goal just a minute later, and making the score 5-3 late in the 3rd. With 1:35 left in the game Gino Mazzarella (Manalapan,NJ/Titans) nets a powerplay goal cutting the Ducks deficit to 1. In a last minute effort Stevens put on a strong offensive effort pulling the goalie for a 6th man, but it was not enough and Wagner scored an empty net goal making the final score 6-4 in favor of the Seahawks.

December 4, 2010, Ice House, Hackensack, NJ
The Ducks hockey team faced off against the Columbia University Lions in conference play. The game opened with the Lions scoring 3 straight goals. Stevens started their comeback at the end of the 1st when Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep) his first of four on the night. With a 3-1 defecit going into the 2nd, Jerry Riccardello (Roxbury, NJ/Wildcats B) scored a goal and the assist coming from Hartt to cut the lead to 1 with just under 2 periods to play. After six minutes of play Rob Kochan (Clifton, NJ/ Clifton) assisted Taylor Brown (Cortland, NY/Syracuse Stars Jr B) for his first goal of the game and tied the game at 3-3. Kevin McMahon (Baldwinsville, NY/ Baldwinsville) scored his first of 2 goals on the day and Stevens took their first lead of the game with 8:40 left in the 2nd period. Columbia tied the game with a goal coming just 4 minutes after McMahon’s. With about 3 minutes left to play in the 2nd period, Stevens went on the powerplay for 5 minutes and they took advantage. On the powerplay the team scored 4 goals from 4 different players which included McMahon, Hartt, Brown, and Eric Yando (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville). The 2nd period ended with the Ducks having an advantage at 8-4. In the 3rd Stevens scored 3 more goals coming, from Hartt and Brown, and allowed only 1 making the final score 11-5. Kamil Scorz (Clifton, NJ/ Clifton) finished the game with 31 saves.

November 20, 2010, Prudential Center, Newark, NJ
Stevens faced off against first ranked Wagner College late Saturday night. The Ducks were able to measure themselves against the best in the MCHC League. Wagner came out strong and showed their skill scoring the first goal. Steven’s Taylor Brown (Cortland, NY/Syracuse Stars Jr B) returned a goal right back, tying the game 3:25 into the first period. Wagner took back the lead in the first period and held it. The Ducks were on their tails in the second period narrowing the score to as close as 4-3. During the rest of the second and third period Wagner showed their talent. The final score finishing at 11-4, shows that while Wagner is the first place team in the league, Stevens wasn’t too far behind. The Ducks will have another chance against Wagner at the away match on December 5th 4:30pm at War Memorial.

The ducks are now on a three game away stretch and will return home after the winter break. The next home game is against SUNY New Paltz January 22nd at 7:30pm. This game puts Stevens 6th in the league with a 4-4 record.

November 14, 2010, Prudential Center , Newark, NJ
The Stevens Ducks took on SUNY Maritime in a battle for 2nd place in the MCHC conference. The opening period the team got off to a slow start allowing 5 unanswered goals in the 1st. Midway through the 2nd period the Ducks finally got their offense going with a goal from Jerry Riccardello (Roxbury, NJ/Wildcats B) and the help of Taylor Brown (Cortland, NY/ Syracuse Stars Jr. B). In the 3rd the team continued their comeback with goals from Jake Lovelace (Wantagh, NY/) and Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep). In the final minute Hartt had his 2nd goal of the night to make the score 5-4 in favor of Maritime. In the last 30 seconds Stevens mounted a strong offensive rush but Maritime was able to hang on for the win with the final score ending at 5-4.

The Ducks are now 4-3 on the season. They play next Saturday, November 20th, against the 1st place team Wagner College. The game is at 8:00pm at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

November 13, 2010, Prudential Center , Newark, NJ
The Stevens Ice Hockey team lost to Fordham University for the second time on the season. The opening period was a tough one as the Ducks saw Fordham go on a 7-0 run. The Ducks saw some light as Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep) scored in the 2nd to make it 8-1, but the Rams scored 4 unanswered goals to end the second. Hartt had 2 more goals in the 3rd for a hat trick but Stevens lost this one to a final score of 14-3.

November 6, 2010, Prudential Center, Newark, NJ

Stevens played against the US Merchant Marine Academy in their 2nd out of the current 5 game home stretch. This 5th league game for the Ducks followed the same pattern as the Ducks’ previous encounter with USMMA.

In the first period, Stevens rolled the first two lines consisting of Gino Mazzarella (Manalapan, NJ/ Titans), Taylor Brown ( Cortland, NY/ Syracuse Star Jr B ), Jerry Riccardello ( Roxbury, NJ/ Wildcats B ) and the other line consisting of Jake Lovelace (Wantagh, NY), Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/ Austin Prep), Brian Chok ( Middlesex, NJ/ Renegrady). These two lines were able to shoot and score a consecutive 7 goals. This would only have been possible with the help of our defense welcoming the return of Sean Devlin (Ocean City, NJ / Vineland Patriots) and Kamil Szorc (Clifton, NJ/ Clifton) averaging an incredible 96.3% save percentage for the game.

During the second Stevens was able to climb to 10-0 before USMMA had a chance to break through. The defensive lines were able to contribute as well scoring twice with the goals coming from Kevin McMahon (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) and Robert Kochan (Clifton, NJ/ Clifton). USMMA was able to narrow the gap scoring 3 times in the game. Stevens was able to score twice more in the third period making the final score 12-3.

The Ducks face Fordham University Saturday November 13th, 2010 @ 8pm and SUNY Maritime Sunday November 14th, 2010 @ 9:15pm.

October 20, 2010, Mennen Sports Arena Morristown, NJ
Stevens took on archrival County College of Morris. After losing twice to CCM last year, Stevens was ready to go coming into their first matchup this season. Stevens got off to a slow start in the first period going down 3-0 early in the period. CCM netted 4 more times in the period but freshman Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/ Austin Prep) tallied 2 of his own in the first. The final score at the end of the first stood at 7-2. The second period was a different story for the Ducks, going on a 5 unanswered goal run to tie the game. This feat was accomplished by Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/ Austin Prep) scoring another goal, Jake Lovelace (Wantagh, NY) scoring the next two goals with the pass coming up from Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/ Austin Prep), Eric Yando (Baldwinsville, NY/ Baldwinsville) with the assistance of Brian Chok ( Middlesex, NJ/ Renegrady). Jerry Riccardello (Roxbury, NJ/ Wildcats B) finished off the streak with the assistance of Taylor Brown (Cortland, NY/ Syracuse Star Jr B) scoring on the Power Play. Stevens was able to continue the streak into the 3rd period with Gino Mazzarella (Manalapan, NJ/ Titans) scoring 2 more goals, one with the help of Taylor Brown ( Cortland, NY/ Syracuse Star Jr B ). CCM in a last stitch effort was able to score twice, one due to a penalty kill. At the end of the 3rd the score was tied 9-9 so the game went to overtime. Overtime only lasted for 2 minutes and 6 seconds with Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/ Austin Prep) scoring the game winning goal for Stevens with the assist coming from Jake Lovelace (Wantagh, NY). The Ducks improve to 3-1 on the season and have a week off before their upcoming 4 game home stretch.

October 17, 2010, Newark, NJ
After opening the regular season with a couple road games, Stevens was glad to be back at the “The Rock” for their first home game of the 2010-2011 season. This past Sunday night, the Ducks faced off against rivals, the Columbia Lions, whom they went 1-2 against last season. Taylor Brown (Cortland, NY/Syracuse Stars Jr. B) was able to get the home crowd to their feet by burying the first 2 goals for Stevens. Columbia didn’t give up and responded with 2 of their own, knotting it back up. Freshman Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep) was able to regain the lead again for Stevens off a pass from Brian Chok (Middlesex,NJ/Renegrady). Columbia again responded and the Ducks soon realized they were in for a close one.

The second period saw almost as much action as the first. Mike Rogowski (Parsippany, NJ/Seton Hall) scored his first goal of the season putting the Ducks up 4-3. Columbia would not shut down, as they fired back and managed to put 2 goals past Kamil Szorc (Clifton, NJ/Clifton). Jake Lovelace (Wantagh, NY) was able to tie things back up, leaving both teams to head into the locker room making adjustments.

In the third, Stevens showed their power in numbers and wore out the Lions. Taylor Brown (Cortland, NY/Syracuse Stars Jr. B) quickly got the Ducks going and managed to bury one to put Stevens ahead in the beginning of the third. Columbia later responded with a goal of their own. With about 9 minutes to go in the third the Ducks were able to gain momentum off a goal from Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep). Stevens was able to retain puck position for a solid amount of the third but ran into trouble with a couple of penalties back to back. The powerplay squad of Columbia was no contest for Stevens, as they managed to kill off both penalties. Jerry Riccardello (Roxbury, NJ/Wildcats B) fed the puck into the empty net to finish off Columbia, handing Stevens its second win of the season.

Stevens is now (2-1-0) in the MCHC, as they head to Mennen Sports Arena this Wednesday night (10/20) to take on CCM.

October 15, 2010, Mount Vernon, NY
The Stevens Ice Hockey team played Fordham University this past Friday night, defending league champions. The Ducks came out strong with a goal in the first 29 seconds of the game by Kevin McMahon (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) from the blue line after receiving a pass from Gino Mazzarella (Manalapan,NJ/Titans) down low. Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep) scored the second goal for Stevens a minute off a pass from Robert Fischer (Midland Park, NJ). Fordham responded with 4 consecutive goals to finish off the first period 4-2 in Fordham’s favor.

The Ducks didn’t quit easily and battled with Fordham, exchanging goals throughout a majority of the game from here on out. Kamil Szorc (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) stood strong in net in the second not letting any pucks past him. Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep) and Gino Mazzarella (Manalapan,NJ/Titans) managed to put the puck in the back of the net to keep the game close. Stevens was able to regain the lead after a goal from Jake Lovelace (Wantagh, NY) with 8 minutes to go in the third. But this wasn’t enough effort from the Ducks as Fordham quickly responded with a goal of their own. Fordham was able to build off their momentum and home crowd to close out the game with 2 more goals back to back. The game ended with a score in favor of the Rams 8-5, handing Stevens its first loss of the season.

On a side note, Stevens is starting to show its discipline and dedication to success by accumulating only 4 penalties this game. This is a definite improvement over their first game, and a huge improvement over last season.

October 8, 2010, Great Neck, NY
The Stevens Ice Hockey team triumphed over Kings Point Merchant Marines Academy, 12-4 last Friday. The Ducks put on a great performance in their first game of the second season. The Ducks welcome many players this year as we say goodbye to a few graduating seniors including Dan Silva (Boonton, NJ/Mountain Lakes) a former captain.

The Ducks came out with a bang with freshman and newly named captain Brandon Hartt (Methuem, MA/Austin Prep) scoring 4 goals in the first period. Eric Yando (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) still managed to get an assist while being moved back to defense due to line changes. USMMA retaliated with 2 goals against in the first period. The second period sealed USMMA’s fate with Jerry Riccardello (Roxbury, NJ/Wildcats B) scoring 3 goals and Taylor Brown (Cortland, NY/Syracuse Starts Jr. B) finishing off the period with another goal. The third period saw a tremendous effort by USMMA to regain some goals against. USMMA was able to put 2 more goals past Kamil Szorc (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) after he fought off 27 shots. Kevin McMahon (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville), Taylor Brown (Cortland, NY/Syracuse Starts Jr. B), and Brian Chok (Middlesex, NJ/Renegrady) were able to close out the game with a combined 4 more goals in the 3rd period.

On a side note the league has recently implemented a zero tolerance policy on hits to the head. Any deliberate hit to the head results in a game disqualification. One of USMMA’s players was disqualified after hitting a Stevens player in the head during a check.

The Ducks are currently (1-0) in the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference ( www.methockey.com ) as they face a tough, young Fordham University team this Friday night at the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon, NY. Stevens Ice Hockey team will return home to face-off against MCHC rival Columbia University this Sunday night at the AmeriHealth Pavilion of the Prudential Center at 7:30PM.
