November 5 and 6, 2011, City Island, NY
Columbia University hosted the M.A.I.S.A. Club Championships at the Morris Yacht Club on City Island, New York.  18 club sailing teams participated this year, causing great competition on the water.  This was the last regatta for the Stevens Sailing Team season.

Saturday:

Winds began around 5-10 mph, with gusts to 13 mph.  As the day went on, the wind died, allowing for only 4 races in A-division and B-division.  After four races, University of Virginia was in first, followed by the University of Pennsylvania and Stevens.

Sunday:

Winds were more reliable than Saturday, averaging 8-13 mph.  5 races were sailed in each division, totaling 9 races for the weekend.  At the end of Sunday, the University of Pennsylvania won the regatta, followed by University of Virginia in 2nd the Stevens Sailing Team in 3rd.

October 29-30, 2011, Annapolis, MD
The War Memorial Regatta is a qualifier for the Atlantic Coast Championships. The top 8 teams qualify, then the next 7 teams qualify for the Atlantic Coast Tournament. This year, the War Memorial Regatta took place at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. There were 18 teams competing, with A and B divisions racing simultaneously. A-division sailed in FJs first, while B-division sailed in 420s.

Saturday:

The morning began with all racing postponed until 1 pm due to gail warnings in the area. The wind was gusting to 37 mph, wind chill was 27 degrees Fahrenheit, and it was raining. At 1 pm racing began. The wind was shifty, still gusting to 25 mph, with fog rolling down the river. Hail, sleet, and snow were also seen during racing on Saturday. 8 races were completed in A-division and B-division.

Sunday:

The weather was much nicer on Sunday, with sunny skies and wind ranging from 8-15 mph. A-division and B-division switched boats, sailing 10 races in each division. Congratulations to Georgetown University for winning the War Memorial Regatta. We look forward to participating next year!

October 22, 2011, King's Point, NY
Stevens participated in the King's Point Dinghy Open Regatta for the first time this year. Hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 19 teams attended sailing FJs and 420s simultaneously for A and B divisions.

Saturday: It was a beautiful day, partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the high sixties. The winds were light and shifty, with occasional puffs up to 15 mph. The wind died as the day went on. A division and B division sailed 8 races. At the end of the day, Dartmouth was in first place. The Stevens sailing team was in 5th.

Sunday: The wind was so light that no races were able to be completed. The regatta was ended at about 1:00 pm.

October 22, 2011, King's Point, NY
The Central Qualifier #2 was hosted by Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. The top two teams at this regatta qualified for the War Memorial Regatta and the top two Club teams qualified for Club Champs. Having already qualified for both of these regattas at Central Qualifier #1, the Stevens Sailing Team used this regatta as an opportunity to train new sailors on the team with little to no experience.

Saturday:

The weather was clear skies and sunny, but the wind was 15-25 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. These challenging conditions proved to be too difficult for some teams, and caused capsizes for almost every team. Four races were sailed in A-division and B-division. Races were postponed from 12:30 to 2:00 pm because there was too much wind. After the first day of sailing, Monmouth University was in the lead, followed by Princeton and Stevens.

Sunday:

Another sunny day with no clouds. The wind was lighter, but still strong, ranging from 13-18 mph. A total of 6 races were sailed in both divisions. The action on the race course was tamed because of the lighter wind, resulting in less capsizes. After a great day of racing, The Stevens Sailing Team won the regatta, winning A and B divisions. Princeton and Monmouth came in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Great job Stevens!

October 8-9th, 2011, Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, Larchmont, NY
This past weeekend, the Stevens Sailing Team was invited to participate in the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta (IOR). This is a regatta hosted at the Larchmont Yacht Club, only possible through the donation of boats by nearly 50 owners. A record 48 teams attended this year, all racing on boats ranging from 34 to 44 feet long. This is the first year that the Stevens Sailing Team has been invited to race in this event. This year, Stevens was given a J105 (34 foot racing keelboat) to race with.

Saturday:

The weather was beautiful, with a high of 79 degrees, but the wind was lacking. The day started off with 5-8 knots of breeze, slowly dying throughout the day. Three races were sailed in each class of boat.

Sunday:

It was another beautiful day, but there was still little to no wind. Three starts were attempted with no races completed. Stevens was in first place, but the race was abandoned. At noon, race committee sent all boats in, followed by awards shortly after. Stevens placed 6th out of 15 boats, narrowly missing a podium finish.

October 1-2th, 2011, Philly Fleet Race, Corinthian Yacht Club, Philadelphia, PA
On Saturday, October 1, 2011, 8 teams participated this week in the Philly Fleet Race at the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia. Racing began at 10:00 am with W4 courses. Winds were relatively light at 5-10 knots from the south, with gusts to 15 at times. A-division sailed 8 races and B-division completed 6. After the first day of racing, The Stevens Sailing Team had a commanding lead.

On Sunday, October 2, 2011, B-division began the day with 2 races around 9:45 am. The wind then died until about noon, but filled in strongly from the southwest with 10-15 knots. Each fleet sailed 4 more races with a W4 course. Weather was mixed, beginning as mostly cloudy with sun at times. In the afternoon, the weather deteriorated to rain and a steady 10-13 knots of wind. Thank you to the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia for allowing the use of their facilities. Congratulations to Stevens Institute of Technology on winning the regatta with 38 points over all.

September 24-25, 2011, Co-ho Memorial Regatta, Glen Cove, NY
Last weekend the Sailing team set off to Webb Institute. Only seven races were sailed due to lack of wind on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday morning. During down time, the team enjoyed a Webb-provided B-B-Q and also took advantage of the unexpected beautiful weather. Although the weekend was bereft of wind, the team was able to train two new members- freshman Julie Payton and sophomore Lara Paul. SST has been trying to incorporate new members all season by offering an extra space to attend both regattas and practices.

The team ended with 18 points in 7 races due to great performances by both A and B division skippers- sophomore Christian Geary and sophomore Matt Guenther respectively. The team won three of the seven races and displayed great sailing strategy in super light-wind conditions. This was Christian Geary’s third regatta of the season and it marked Matt Guenther’s fall debut. Overall, much was learned this weekend and new friendships were made. Overall, SST placed 2nd. Christian Geary came in 1st in A-division, and Matt Guenther came in 4th in B-Division.

September 17-18, 2011, Ocean County, NJ
The Central Qualifier is a regatta to qualify for the War Memorial Regatta, which is a qualifier for Atlantic Coast Championships. The top four teams qualify for WMR. The Central Qualifier was hosted by the Ocean County College at the Tom's River Yacht Club. A total of 16 teams competed in the regatta.

Saturday:

A total of 12 races were sailed in A division, and 11 races were sailed in B division. At the end of Saturday, the top four teams were NAVY, St. Mary's College, University of Pennsylvania, and Stevens Insitute of Technology.

Sunday:

Only four races were sailed in A division, and five races in B division. The wind was much higher (12-20 mph), but still very shifty and puffy. Skies were partly cloudy. At the end of the regatta, NAVY got first, followed by University of Pennsylvania, St. Mary's College, and Stevens Institute of Technology. Go Stevens for qualifying!

September 24-25, 2011, Co-ho Memorial Regatta, Glen Cove, NY
Saturday:

The Cornell Fall Open was greeted with no wind in the AM until about 10:30 when the Northerly breeze filled. The breeze was steady throughout the day anywhere from 5-12mph and the RC was able to get 8A and 6B races in until the Northerly died at 5:15pm. Currently leading the event is Hobart and William Smith Colleges, followed by Cornell and Stevens. Stevens filed a protest resulting in a DSQ for Fordham in race 2B. Thank you to our volunteer jury of coaches for hearing the protest.

Sunday:

Sailors showed up to find a light southerly that barely lasted long enough to complete 2 B Division races. Racing was postponed at that point for about a half an hour when the southerly came back in pushed by some approaching storms. One more race in each division was completed before the storms came too close and racing was then canceled at 1:30pm.In total 9A and 9B races were held. Thank you to the Cornell Sailors for running the races and organizing the event. The Stevens Sailing Team came in 3rd place overall.

Sailing in A-division was skipper Gerard Tonachel and crew Mike Cianfaglione
Sailing in B-division was skipper Christian Geary and crew Kyle Ripley
