Stevens to Welcome Softball as a Varsity
Sport for 2009-10 School Year

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 15, 2008) Stevens Institute of Technology Director of Athletics Russell Rogers (Branchburg, N.J.) announced Friday that softball will be added as a varsity sport for the 2009-10 school year. Stevens, who currently has a club softball team that competes in the National Club Softball Association, will compete in the Empire 8 effective for the 2010 softball season. Softball will be the 26th varsity program that Stevens offers.

Erica Mehalick (Hoboken, N.J.), the current coach of the club squad, will be the first head coach in the history of the Stevens softball program.

“I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to pioneer the softball program from a club team to the varsity sport,” said Mehalick. “This was my exact intention and goal when I came to Stevens three years ago.  The athletes have worked hard and proved their dedication to the sport and I know they are ready to compete at the next level.”

The Ducks home field will be located at Weehawken High School in Weehawken, N.J. The surface is Field Turf and the field itself takes on an appearance much like Dobbelar Baseball Field at the De Baun Athletic Complex on the Stevens campus. The facility, which is just one year old, has lights, batting cages and a great deal of practice space outside of the playing field itself.

The Empire 8 will be a very competitive conference for softball as St. John Fisher College won the conference tournament in 2008 and Ithaca College earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Ithaca finished fourth overall a year ago and had won six-straight conference titles before last season.

“I want this team to continue to love playing the game and to be competitive,” added Mehalick. “Our goal for the first season is to improve each time we step on the field and finish in the top half of the Empire 8.”

Stevens currently has a roster of 15 players and will be led by junior shortstop Naomi Sacks (Schnecksville, Pa.). Sacks moved to shortstop last season and has great physical and mental skills. Sarah Parker (Stafford, Va.) and Denise Wagner (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), presently sophomores, will be looked upon to lead the Ducks in 2009-10. Senior Jessica Megill (Clark, N.J.) won’t be on the team next year but has been a two-year captain and club president since 2006.

“Softball is a sport in which I feel we can make significant strides quickly,” said Rogers. “The club team has been together for some time, we offer outstanding facilities, and Stevens is located right in the middle of a very strong region for the sport. I have great confidence in Coach Mehalick to lead the team in its transition to varsity status in the years to come.”

The Ducks’ 2008-09 schedule will feature club squads from the University of Connecticut, The College of New Jersey, Rutgers University, Princeton University, Lafayette College and New York University. The Ducks only home game this fall is versus NYU on October 26. They will open their fall slate at NYU on October 4.
