The Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics hired Glenn DeHaven as its women’s volleyball head coach in 2012-13 and he will begin his fifth season at the helm of the program this fall.
DeHaven is the fourth coach in the program’s 28-year history, and was chosen in April 2015 as one of the American Volleyball Coaches Associations top 30 coaches under 30.
Under the guidance of DeHaven, Mary Tobin was named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year while Sydni Horner was tabbed Libero/Defensive Specialist of the Year. DeHaven claimed another Coaching Staff of the Year honor, as the Ducks advanced to the Empire 8 Conference Championship game in fall of 2015.
DeHaven led Stevens to 33 wins in 2014, marking the fourth most in program history. The unit, led by Mary Tobin’s 477 kills, dropped only four sets during Empire 8 Conference regular season play en route to a second straight regular season championship. While hosting the Empire 8 postseason tournament, freshman Brianna Evans was named E8 Most Outstanding Player in straight set victories over Houghton College and Nazareth College for the team’s first E8 title since 2009.
For his efforts, DeHaven and his staff were chosen as Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year while freshman libero Sydni Horner earned Rookie of the Year honors. The Ducks reached the NCAA Tournament, and hosted a regional where they fell to Clarkson University in the Regional Final after topping Framingham State University and Roger Williams University.
In 2013, DeHaven guided the Ducks to a 27-7 overall record – a 10.5-match improvement from 2012 – and the regular season Empire 8 Conference title with a perfect 7-0 record. Stevens once again played for the conference postseason championship and hosted the tournament in Canavan Arena. DeHaven was named Empire 8 Coach of the Year en route to the Ducks sweeping all four major conference awards. Samantha Gates claimed Player of the Year honors, Kirsten Salmins was the leagues’ top Defensive Specialist/Libero and Mary Tobin earned Rookie of the Year. Gates also garnered Academic All-America status to become the second-ever women’s volleyball student-athlete to receive that honor.
In his first season at Stevens, DeHaven guided the Ducks to the Empire 8 Conference Championship match where they eventually fell in five sets to Nazareth College for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Stevens finished the campaign with a 17-18 overall record which was a tremendous turnaround after a 0-9 start to the year. Four members of the team earned all-conference recognition, led by Player of the Year and four-time All-America Maggie Kowalska.
DeHaven spent two seasons in Lexington, Ky. at Transylvania College before arriving in Hoboken. While at Transylvania, DeHaven helped guide the Pioneers to back-to-back regular season Heartland Conference championships and a 45-19 overall mark, including 26 victories in 2010.
Before his stint at Transylvania, DeHaven coached for two seasons at his alma mater, Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa. as a men’s assistant from 2008-10. In 2009, the Eagles claimed the Molten National Championship and three student-athletes earned All-America honors while DeHaven was on the sidelines.
As a student-athlete at Juniata, DeHaven was a four-year starter from 2003-07 and was on four Molten National Championship teams, while earning a Bachelor of Science degree in sports management.
DeHaven has also served as head coach for two club teams (Lexington United 18 Elite and Velocity 18’s) while in Kentucky and the girls varsity team at Huntingdon Area High School in Pennsylvania. He has also served as an evaluator for USA Volleyball in 2009 and 2010, as well as an assistant tournament director for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region in 2008.
DeHaven and his wife Brittany had their first child in July 2014, a daughter named Aria Grace.
