ROCHESTER, N.Y. (November 19, 2012) – It was announced earlier today, November 19, that freshman
Amy Regan (Green Brook, N.J.) of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's cross country team swept the Empire 8 Conference yearly awards after a historic cross country season.
Since the inception of the Empire 8 in 2003, only one other runner has taken both Runner and Rookie of the Year until Regan did so this season. She is also the first non-Ithaca College competitor to win the Empire 8 individual title.
Over the two-plus month season, Regan's performances improved tremendously from the opening meet on September 1 through the NCAA Championship this past weekend. In the first 6K course she has ever ran, Regan posted a time of 23:46 in Rochester, N.Y. on September 15. On the exact same course for the Atlantic Region, Regan bettered her previous time by nearly one-and-a-half minutes, with a time of 22:19. Her time of 22:07 at the NCAA Division III Championship (40th place) proved to be her personal best and a school record. Regan and the rest of the Stevens cross country student-athletes have flourished in the training program implemented by first year Head Coach
Justin Wood.
The freshman recorded four top-15 finishes on the season and her individual title at the Empire 8's was her first career victory in any race, high school or college.
