HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 12, 2013) – Senior
Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) converted a penalty stroke 4:02 into overtime to lift the Stevens Institute of Technology to a wild 4-3 win over Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher College on Senior Day at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
Chavez needed three points to break Stevens' all-time points record and got them, assisting on the Ducks' first score of the game and getting two more via the game-winning-goal. She now has 130 for her career, one more than former record holder
Kara Borzillo.
Stevens moves to 5-0 in the Empire 8 (8-4 overall) with the win, while Fisher drops to 2-2 in the conference (6-7 overall).
On a day when the Ducks honored six seniors prior to the start of the game, a pair of seniors started the scoring.
Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) put Stevens on top 1-0 at 2:38 when she received a pass from the right end-line from
Marguerite Chavez in the middle of the circle, controlled and then hammered her shot into the left corner for her fifth of the season.
Senior
Chelsea Cresci (Wilmington, Del.) gave Stevens a 2-0 margin with a pretty one-timer. Freshman
Nolie Prouty (Glendora, Calif.) delivered a perfect pass to Cresci who connected without needing to control. It was the first score of the year for the veteran.
Prouty's second assist gave Stevens a 3-0 advantage with a shade under nine minutes left in the first. Prouty again entered the circle on the right side and crossed in front to Brook who did a nice job controlling before creating some space for a nice shot that snuck in the right side. The goal was brook's eighth of the season, with Prouty netting her fourth assist.
Fisher found its way on the scoreboard late in the first half to slice the Stevens lead to two, and then fought back within one goal with 14:30 in regulation thanks to a converted stroke.
The Cardinals sent the game into overtime with a breakaway goal with 34 seconds left. Junior
Marissa Vedella (Elma, N.Y.) stuck with the play after Stevens goalkeeper
Emily Stukenborg (Stockholm, N.J.) broke up the initial rush.
The goal was contested by Stevens due to a St. John Fisher player returning to play before a penalty had expired, but after a great deal of deliberation, the goal was allowed regulation expired.
Fisher generated a great early chance in overtime, just missing wide left after a penalty corner, but the Ducks quickly switched the field. Stevens created several shots on corners before a Fisher foul in front led to Chavez's game-winning stroke and record-breaking play.
Stukenborg made one save for the Ducks in goal to earn the win. Fisher's
Danielle Famolaro (Rome, N.Y.) made 11 saves in defeat.
The Ducks dominated possession, field position and the stat sheet despite needing overtime to win. They ended with a 17-7 edge in corners and a 31-6 margin in shots.
Stevens has a firm grasp on the top spot in the conference standings, holding tiebreakers over second, third and fourth place with one E8 game to go against Elmira College October 26.
Stevens will return to action on October 16 when it hosts Rowan University at 4 p.m. in a non-conference contest at the De Baun Athletic Complex. All the action can be seen live at
