LOUISVILLE, Ky. (November 14, 2013) – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) unveiled its all-region performers from eight sectors in Division III and two members of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team landed on the New York honorable mention team.
Senior
Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman
Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) were two of six student-athletes to be named to the honorable mention team within the New York region, while 14 others were voted to the region's first-team. The duo helped lead Stevens to a 27-7 overall record and a trip to the Empire 8 Conference Championship match last weekend.
Gates, the Empire 8 Player of the Year, dished out 1,168 assists in 117 sets played this season and established the school's all-time record for assists with 3,534. She also holds the program mark with assists in a match at 62 which she set last season. Gates appears three times on the single-season assists list and now holds the third and fourth slots.
Tobin, this season's conference Rookie of the Year, ranked first for Stevens in kills (325), kills per set (3.04) and points per set (3.32.) She was also tied for second with 355.5 points and was second with 348 digs. In 107 set played over 31 matches, Tobin posted 14 double-doubles and put down a career-high 20 kills against Haverford College on September 25. Her career-high in digs effort came against RIT on November 1, where she posted 21 in the victory.
Gates and Tobin become the seventh and eighth members in 28 years of Stevens women's volleyball to be named AVCA All-Region.
