HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 23, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team outscored visiting SUNY New Paltz by 10 points in the second half to come away with a 69-59 victory in Canavan Arena on Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-1 on the season. Four Ducks scored in double figures in the win.
Stevens (3-1) connected on 23 of its 53 shots in the contest for a 43.4 shooting percentage, while New Paltz (0-4) shot just 30.8 percent (16-for-52) from the field. In the second half, the Ducks posted a 44 percent field goal percentage (11-of-25) and held the Hawks to 20.8 percent (5-for-24) which proved to be a difference in the showdown. Stevens also dominated within the paint, outscoring New Paltz, 32-6.
Senior
Avis Benjamin (Queens, N.Y.) netted a game-high 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting and went 9-for-11 at the free throw line. Benjamin also pulled down six offensive rebounds in the game. Freshman
Hannah Brophy (Bridgewater, N.J.) poured in 13 points off the bench for the Ducks on 5-of-7 shooting in 26 minutes.
Sophomore
Dylan Krause (Atlanta, Ga.) went 5-for-10 overall and 2-for-5 from three-point range to tally 12 points and led Stevens with eight rebounds. Senior
Molly Spadaro (Sewell, N.J.) also chipped in 12 points on an economic day from the field, going 4-for-5 with four made free throws in just 12 minutes of playing time.
Freshman
Erica Guketlov (Spotswood, N.J.) dished out six of the team's 15 assists to go along with five points and five boards. Sophomore
Miranda Ripken (Fallston, Md.) snatched seven rebounds and added four points.
Stevens jumped out in the second half on a 17-5 run to go up, 52-40, with 11:50 remaining in regulation. Over the final 11-plus minutes, New Paltz could only bring the game to within nine points on two separate occasions. The Ducks led by as many as 17 points, 67-50, with just under three minutes to go in the contest.
The Ducks travel to Centenary College on November 26 for a 6 p.m. showdown. On the 30th, Stevens hosts William Paterson University at 1 p.m.
