Evan Klimchak Interview

HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 4, 2013) – Sophomore guard Evan Klimchak (Readington, N.J.) scored a career-high 28 points on 9-for-11 from the field including six three-pointers to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team to 90-78 win over Baruch College Wednesday night in the Canavan Arena.

Klimchak shot 6-for-8 from deep and converted all four of his attempts from the foul line as the Ducks improved to 3-3 on the young 2013-14 season. Baruch fell to 4-2 in defeat.

Stevens finished the contest with 16 assists and a season-low 13 turnovers, and the Ducks shot 56.1 percent from the floor (32-for-57), 44 percent from three and 83 percent from the foul line (15-for-18).

After the Bearcats ended the first half on a 7-0 run that included a 45-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to cut an eight-point Duck lead to one, they took their first lead of the game on the first possession of the second period.

The lead went back-and-forth over the next eight minutes, and Baruch took its largest margin of the contest with 11:14 remaining following a layup from junior forward Granville Gittens (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Klimchak and the Ducks responded, as the sophomore buried a jumper and then canned a three-pointer to give the Ducks a one-point margin with 10:21 to play.

With the score knotted at 63 apiece, the hosts went on a 14-3 run over the next 3:53 to open a 77-66 edge at the 4:39 mark. Klimchak started the spurt with a layup, and senior guard Andrew Meszaros (Phoenxville, Pa.) drained a pretty jumper in the lane to make it 67-63. Junior forward Patrick Sabatino (Westfield, N.J.) was able to put the Ducks up five after a Bearcat basket thanks to a three-pointer, and following a stop and defensive rebound from sophomore forward Alex Lorenz (Point Pleasant Borough, N.J.), a three-pointer from senior guard Phillip DeSeignora (Boston, Mass.) put the Ducks up eight. One out of two at the line for Baruch, and four-straight points from junior forward Kenny Gan (Hillsborough, N.J.) capped the run and the Ducks never looked back.

Baruch was able to fight within six points when sophomore guard Raymond De La Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a three with 1:51 on the clock, but two free throws from senior guard Matt Skrelja (Clark, N.J.) took away any Bearcat momentum, and the Ducks executed down the stretch for the win.

Cruz hit seven three-pointers to lead Baruch, finishing with 23 points and three assists. Gittens had 15 points and five rebounds in a solid performance.

Klimchak added a steal, an assist and a rebound to his great scoring night. Skrelja finished with 17 points, four boards, four assists and a  game-high six steals, while Meszaros had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four helpers. It was the veteran's second double-double of the year. Lorenz played big minutes for the Ducks off the bench, scoring 10 points and grabbing three rebounds, while Gan finished with six points, seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal.

The Ducks held a 38-22 margin in points in the paint, and their largest lead was 14 points.

Stevens will return to the hardwood on December 10 when it hosts cross-river rival NYU in the Canavan Arena beginning at 7 p.m.
