Grapplers Improve to 3-0 in Centennial Conference with Wins Over McDaniel, Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (January 25, 2014) – The 19th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team earned wins over McDaniel College and Muhlenberg College Saturday to improve to 3-0 in Centennial Conference action.
 
The Ducks downed McDaniel, 31-16, before beating host Muhlenberg, 50-3, and are now 8-5 overall.

Freshman Rob Murray gave Stevens an early lead at 125 thanks to six points via forfeit, but the Green Terror would answer with three-straight bout wins to open a 13-6 lead heading into the 157-pound weight class.
 
At 157, sophomore Leo Wortman brought the Ducks within one after a win by fall (5:37) over Erik Meyer, and freshman Colin Navickas followed with a major at 165 to give the Ducks a lead they would never relinquish.
 
Junior 174-pounder Zach Bass earned Stevens' second fall of the day, this one coming just 1:27 into his bout with Marvin McKinney, to hand the Ducks a 22-13 margin, and senior Ryan Dormann did the same at 184 to put Stevens on top by 15 points with just two bouts left.
 
McDaniel earned a win at 197, but junior Chris Florek closed the dual with a hard-fought 3-1 decision over Taylor Avino in the heavyweight division.
 
Stevens 50, Muhlenberg 3
In the Ducks' second dual of the day, they earned six wins via forfeit for a total of 36 points. Murray eanred a 10-4 decision victory at 125  to open the match and give Stevens a 3-0 edge, with sophomore Dillon Guarino getting the forfeit win at 133. At 141, sophomore Ryan Wilson tallied a technical fall to put Stevens on top 14-0), and after a loss at 149, sophomore Keith Cays (157), Wortman (165), Navickas (174), Zach Bass (184), Dormann (197) and Florek (HWT) all notched victories via the forfeit.
 
"It was great to start getting more guys back on the mats healthy today," Head Wrestling Coach Mike Clayton said. "Our diets, technique and cardio are all improving and some guys really stepped up with gutsy performances."
 
Stevens will return to action on February 1 when the Ducks travel to California, Md. for Centennial Conference duals with Johns Hopkins University and Ursinus College.
