No. 29 Wrestling Drops Pair of Centennial Conference Duals in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, Md. (February 1, 2014) – The 29th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team was defeated by No. 20 Ursinus College and Johns Hopkins University Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, Md.
 
Stevens falls to 8-7 on the season and 3-2 in the Centennial Conference. The Ducks were downed by Ursinus, 35-6, and Hopkins, 21-19.
 
Leading Stevens was junior heavyweight Chris Florek and senior 184-pounder Ryan Dormann who both went 2-0 on the day.
 
Ursinus 36, Stevens 5
No. 20 Ursinus earned wins in the first seven bouts of the dual to open a 30-0 edge. The Bears tallied two pins and a technical fall. Sophomore Leo Wortman at 157 battled but ultimately dropped a 5-3 decision, as did junior Zach Bass at 174 who dropped a 6-4 decision.
 
Dormann got Stevens on the board at 184 with a 4-1 decision over junior Daniel Manganaro - the 10th-ranked 184-pounder in NCAA Division III - and after a loss at 197, Florek notched a 4-3 decision for the Ducks over freshman Matan Peleg .
 
Johns Hopkins 21, Stevens 19
The Ducks fell behind 9-0 after a technical fall and major decision at 125 and 133, but sophomore Ryan Wilson put the Ducks on the scoreboard with a 3-1 decision over Evan Krumheuer.
 
The lead went to 18-3 for the hosts of the tri-match behind a win by fall and decision at 149 and 157, but junior Conner Bass and Zach Bass won by major decision and by fall to make it 18-13. Conner Bass picked up a 12-2 win at 165 and Zach Bass pinned Jared Forman at 2:13 of the first period at 174.
 
Dormann got the Ducks within two points (18-16) behind a decision at 184, but a Blue Jays decision extended the Hopkins lead to five (21-16) heading into the final bout of the day.
 
In the heavyweight bout, Florek was able to earn a decision for three points but it wasn't enough as the Ducks suffered a hard-luck loss.
 
Stevens will return to action next Saturday when it hosts a Centennial Conference tri-match against Washington & Lee University and Gettysburg College beginning at 11 a.m.
