Softball Joins Strikeout Cancer Campaign For Home Opener Tomorrow

3/21/2014 1:22:00 PM

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 21, 2014) – Fresh off their best start in school history, the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team will host their home opener on Saturday against New Jersey City University (2-10), while also joining in the fight against breast cancer.

"In collaboration with the American Cancer Society and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the Stevens Ducks softball team will be participating in the Strikeout Cancer Campaign," head coach Erica Mehalick said. "The objective is to make the community, Stevens, and Hoboken alike, aware of the facts and figures directly correlated to breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2014 alone, one in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Additionally, approximately 40,000 women will die from breast cancer."

Starting tomorrow and continuing through the games on March 29, the team will be running a monetary pledge fundraiser for every strikeout the pitching staff earns. The week entails home doubleheaders on March 22 and 29, and away ones on March 26 and 27.

"Flat donations are also welcomed for those who would rather not pledge per strikeout," Mehalick said. "In exchange for a donation, individuals will get a pink ribbon which will be hung on the exterior of our dugout on game-day where they can choose to honor a loved-one."

All the information can be found on the pledge form, and 100 percent of the money raised will do directly to the American Cancer Society.

Be sure to come out and support the Ducks and a great cause tomorrow at Weehawken Waterfront Stadium with games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Fan busses will leave from in front of Jonas Hall at approximately 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.  Live stats will be available at stevensducks.com, as well as updates on Twitter @stevensducks.
