Sweep for Women’s Volleyball on Saturday

SALISBURY, Md. (August 30, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team improved its record to 3-1 on the season with sweeps of Mount Aloysius College and Swarthmore College on Saturday at the Salisbury Opener.

Stevens 3, Mount Aloysius 0

The Ducks eased to their straight-sets victory over Mount Aloysius, 25-15, 25-10, 25-14, and hit .306 in the match to go along with nine aces. Stevens never trailed in the first two sets and ran off 10 consecutive points in the second set after a 15-10 score.

Sophomore Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) registered a team-best 10 kills and added two service aces and two blocks. Fellow sophomore Becca Youngman (Rochester, N.Y.) chipped in nine kills to go along with four digs, while junior Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) recorded eight kills.

Senior Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) dished out 35 assists in a solid offensive performance that included four kills and two aces. Castillo also tallied nine digs.

Junior Kristen Herchenroder (Breezy Point, N.Y.) hit a team-high .625 on five kills in eight attempts, and sophomore Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) finished with nine digs and six kills.

Defensively, freshman Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) posted six digs, while senior Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) posted five.

Stevens 3, Swarthmore 0

In the final match of the weekend, Stevens topped Swarthmore, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19, and used 10 total blocks (six assists, four solo) with seven aces to finish off the sweep on Saturday.

Freshman Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) stepped in for the Ducks and notched a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Sciarra added nine kills, six digs and three aces to her afternoon.

Horner picked up her second 20-plus dig effort in the early season with 23 from the back line and Tobin accounted for 16 digs and six kills.

Castillo also posted a double-double with 26 assists and 13 digs with four blocks.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Castillo and Tobin were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Stevens hosts its home opener on September 3 at 7 p.m. against Hunter College for its next match.
