Course Descriptions
Archery: The basics of Olympic style target archery are taught along with safety. The class includes a tournament, group and individual instruction and archery games. All equipment is provided and use of personal equipment is not allowed.
Badminton: An introductory course on the basic strokes, strategy and rules of the game of badminton. Emphasis is on instruction, practice and skill integration in a competitive setting. Skill development will include singles and doubles play.
Basketball: Learn the fundamental skills and techniques of this popular sport! Class topics include shooting, ball handling, passing, rules and different types of offenses and defenses. Scrimmage play and various contests are also included in the class.
Bowling: An introductory course for the beginning bowler. Basic fundamentals and mechanics of bowling will be covered. Emphasis is placed on good technique and learning game rules and scoring. The class is taught in an enjoyable environment on the ground floor of the Howe Center.
C.P.R.: This American Red Cross certified class includes infant, child and adult CPR. Participants who satisfactorily complete required class activities and tests, will receive Red Cross certification. There is a book and card fee of $20. Options to take First Aid and AED certification are also available if time permits.
Dance: Introduction to social dance. Variety of dances are covered. Some possibilities are Swing, Salsa, Latin Club, Tango and Ballroom. Course is taught by a professional dance instructor. In addition to the enrollment fee for PE credit there is an additional $75 fee.
Fencing: An introductory course for beginners. Students will learn basic foil, including footwork, offensive and defensive blade work strategy in a competitive setting.
Fitness: : Course will educate students on the most updated information in the areas of nutrition, exercise, and overall wellness by utilizing the five components of fitness: Flexibility, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Body Composition, and Cardiovascular Strength and Endurance. After completion of the course, students will have a greater understanding of the above-mentioned areas in order to be able to utilize the information in everyday life.
Golf: This introductory course in golf covers the proper use of clubs and other equipment necessary to play the game. Emphasis is placed on instructor demonstration and student practice of the basic techniques of stance, grip, swing and follow thru. Students learn how to strike the ball, keep score.
Outdoor Adventure Program: Students registered for the program will participate in a minimum of the three outdoor recreation experiences per semester. Activities include: hiking, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, and rock climbing. In addition to the enrollment fee for PE credit there is an additional $105.00 fee.
Racquetball: An introduction course covering the fundamental strokes, strategy and rules of racquetball. Emphasis will be placed upon skill development and the execution of these skills under match conditions.
Rock Climbing, Indoor: An introductory course located in the indoor rock climbing facility in Jacobus Hall. All fundamental aspects of climbing including safety will be taught and reinforced.
Soccer: An introduction course for beginners. Teaching emphasis will be placed upon learning skills, tactics and rules of playing soccer. Ball control will be emphasized. Students will receive instruction in passing, heading, dribbling and shooting.
Squash: An introductory course for beginners. Teaching emphasis will be on strokes, service, return of service and basic strategy. Match play will be introduced to reinforce instruction.
Strength and Conditioning: A comprehensive course that encompasses all aspects of the development of muscular strength as well as cardio-vascular fitness. Emphasis on developing personal training programs.
Swimming: Basic and intermediate: Emphasis will be on proper techniques in breathing and stroke execution.

- Scuba: Explore the underworld with self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba.) This course teaches safety procedures and equipment use. Course leads to NAUI certification. Both classroom and pool sessions prepare student for open-water testing. First four sessions at Stevens, fifth at a deep water pool (TBA.) Transportation not included. Basic equipment and text is provided. Stevens PE credit and reduced rate for Stevens students, faculty, staff and spouses. Prerequisites: Swim Test at first class meeting; age 12+, medical questionnaire. Enrollment will be limited to 6-10 students.
Tai Chi: Get relief from stress with the ancient healing art of Tai Chi. In addition to the enrollment fee for PE credit there is an additional $64.00 fee.
Tennis: This is a beginner level course that has lifetime benefits. Fundamental aspects that will be taught are ground strokes, serving and lobbing. Rules, scoring, etiquette and strategy will also be covered.
Wellness Classes:
Cardio-Kick Boxing - Try the newest exercise for cardio fitness. This class is designed for beginners as well as advanced individuals. Fee is $50.
Northern Shaolin - one of the oldest styles of martial arts in existence. Considered a soft style, Northern Shaolin teaches students how to defend themselves using their opponent’s force against them. This class is for beginners and will meet once/week for one hour. Fee is $60.
Pilates - transforms the way your body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength without excessive bulk, creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and flat abdomen. Using smooth controlled movement, Pilates strengthens and stretches simultaneously. Fee is $50.
Tai Chi Chuan for Beginners (Yang style) - This class is a great opportunity to experience meditation, concentration and relaxation through self-defense. Beginners level class. Fee is $60.
Yoga - is a unique and challenging form of exercise that focuses the mind, reduces stress levels, builds mental concentration and physical strength. It instills a sense of calm inner peace, teaching you to remain calm in uncomfortable and stressful situations, while creating long, lean muscles. Fee is $50.
Women’s Beginning Golf: The basics of the golf stroke and putting. Emphasis on golf etiquette, rules, attire and business golf. Field trips are taken to driving ranges, the U.S. Golf Association main office and a par three golf course.
