Stevens Ducks

No. 1 Seed: Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks (21-4, 11-3 Empire 8)

Stevens Institute of Technology comes into the tournament with an overall record of 21-4 and a conference mark of 11-3. The Ducks are the No. 1 seed and host of the Empire 8 Men’s Basketball Championship for the first time since joining the conference for the 2007-08 season. Two-time all-conference performer Sheldon Jones leads the team in scoring and is second in the conference at 16.9 points per game. Fellow senior Russ Thompson averages 14.5 points per game and is second in the league in three-point shooting, with sophomore forward Patrick Sabatino pouring in 13.6 points and grabbing 6.0 rebounds per game. Junior guard Matt Skrelja leads the league in steals and is tops on the team rebounding and assists, and sophomore forward Kenny Gan is second in the conference in blocked shots, while averaging 6.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per outing. Stevens is 2-0 against Utica, and 1-1 against both St. John Fisher and Ithaca this year.



Ithaca Bombers

The Ithaca College men’s basketball team (17-8, 10-4 Empire 8) returns to the Empire 8 Championship Tournament as the only team to make an appearance in each of the conference’s 10 tournaments. The Bombers won their first Empire 8 Championship title in 2012. Ithaca senior Travis Warech paces the Bombers with 15.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. He also has a Bomber-best 17 blocks. Junior Frank Mitchell adds 14.9 points and 6.4 boards per contest. Senior Andrei Oztemel is scoring 12.4 a game and junior Tom Sweeney 10.4. Senior Sean Rossi has dished out a team-best 174 assists. Rossi ranks tied for first in NCAA Division III history with 917 career assists and is one of 18 student-athletes across all divisions to ever meet the 900-assist threshold. Senior Jordan Healey has swiped a team-best 38 steals. The Bombers are shooting 46.1 percent from the floor and 72.1 percent from the free throw line.



St. John Fisher Cardinals

No. 3 Seed: St. John Fisher College Cardinals (17-8, 10-4 Empire 8)

The St. John Fisher College men’s basketball program enters the Empire 8 Championship on an eight-game winning streak, including an 82-73 win over nationally-ranked Stevens in the regular-season finale last Saturday.  Fisher is 11-3 all-time in Empire 8 Championship action.  The Cardinals went 2-0 in the first four years of the tournament’s history. Fisher is led by senior Jason Norsen.  The two-time  Capital One Academic All-American ranks first nationally in blocked shots and 11th in field goal percentage. The 1,000-point scorer also leads Fisher in scoring (14.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg) this year as well. Fellow senior Justin Plata is averaging 13.8 points per game in Fisher’s eight-game winning streak.  Sophomore guard Thad Wier leads Fisher in 3-pointers made with 54 – twice as many as any other player. Freshman point guard Chaz  Lott, a six-time Empire 8 Rookie of the Week, is averaging 11.0 points and 5.2 rebounds.  He also ranks in the top 3 in the Empire 8 in assists (4.4 pg) and steals (2.2 pg).  In the last eight games, Lott is averaging a team-best 14.8 points per game, while shooting 64.2 percent from the floor.
Utica Pioneers

No. 4 Seed:  Utica College Pioneers (12-13,  8-6 Empire 8)

The Utica College men’s basketball team enters the conference tournament as one of the hottest teams in the Empire 8, having won seven of its final nine contests in the regular season.  The Pioneers hold a 12-13 overall record and an 8-6 mark in conference play.  Four-straight wins to close out the regular season propelled the Pioneers into the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed.  Utica edged out Nazareth College to earn its first tournament bid since the 2008-09 season.  Utica junior Connor Maisch currently leads the nation in three-point field goal percentage (53.5 percent) and he finished the regular season ranked fourth in the Empire 8 with an average of 16.5 points per game.  He also leads the conference and ranks eighth nationally with an average of 3.32 three-point field goals per contest. Junior forward Chris Jeffers is currently averaging 12.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He has registered eight double-doubles over the course of 25 games this year.
