Stevens returns to action on Monday, March 8 at No. 6 Kean University Game 1: Stevens 5, Skidmore 2 After four scoreless innings, Skidmore finally broke through in the top half of the fifth on a Jake Mendell (St. George, Vt.) one-out double to right center that scored freshman Leejay Pollacchi (Porter Corners, N.Y.). Ackermann led off the bottom half of the stanza with Stevens’ first hit of the afternoon – a single to right center – but junior Matt Glassman hit into a double-play to eliminate the threat. Still up a run in the sixth, Skidmore senior Derek Stork (Penn Yan, N.Y.) hit Ducks’ sophomore second baseman Tom Phillips with two outs before walking senior Mark Rasulo. Thoroughbreds’ skipper Ron Plourde then called on junior right-hander Nick Laracuente (Tenafly, N.J.) to shut the door on the Ducks, but the Tenafly, N.J. native quickly surrendered a Meerendonk game-tying single. Grimes then singled up the middle, driving in Rasulo, before an Ackermann double to right center plated both Grimes and Meerendonk, capping off a four-run Stevens sixth. The Ducks would tack on an insurance run in the eighth when Phillips – who drew a lead-off walk before making his way to third – scored on a passed ball. Mereendonk scattered eight hits in six innings while striking out five en route to his second win of the season, while Stork surrendered just one hit in five and two thirds despite taking the loss. Game 2 Skidmore 8, Stevens 2 Skidmore struck early and often in the nightcap, racking up seven runs over the first two innings. The Thoroughbreds scored three runs in the first on an Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, N.J.) homer and a Mike Jaffe (Wynnewood, Pa.) single before plating four in the second. Stevens got on the board in the bottom half of the second when senior Anthony Andrews lifted a sacrifice fly out to center, scoring Grimes, but a two-out, Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) single in the top of the third made it 8-1 Skidmore. Senior lefty Spencer Marcus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) picked up the victory allowing just one run on four hits in five innings, while sophomore hurler Chris Tucci lasted just one and a third, while surrendering five runs in the loss. Freshman Mark Poinsett tossed four solid innings in his Scarlet and Gray debut, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out two.
