Box Score vs. Fitchburg State - March 16, 2010

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 15, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to 5-6 on the season after suffering a 7-4 loss at the hands of Fitchburg State University during play at the 2010 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Auburndale, Fla. The Ducks will look to bounce back on Wednesday, March 17 against in-state rival Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham.

Senior shortstop Eddie Daniele went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while fellow senior Anthony Andrews finished 3-for-5 with a run scored. Junior Ken Meerendonk had a 2-for-4 outing, while senior Mark Rasulo, junior Russ Grimes and sophomore Ryan Kiczek each recorded a hit in the loss.

Stevens’ junior righthander Dan Anunziatta went five innings, scattering seven hits, while allowing two earned runs in the loss. Freshman reliever Michael Donovan made his Scarlet and Gray debut, tossing three shutout innings, surrendering just two hits, while striking out five.

Scoreless after one, the Falcons opened up scoring in the top half of the second, on a Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn.) lead-off homer to left center. The Ducks quickly responded in the bottom half of the stanza, tying the game on a Daniele, one-out double down the rightfield line, that scored Grimes.

Fitchburg struck again in the top half of the fourth, tallying four runs to take a 5-1 lead. Sophomore Michal Mercier (Townsend, Mass.) got things started with a two-out single through the right side, scoring junior Andrew Foster (East Bridgewater, Mass.) – who reached on a one-out double down the leftfield line. Mercier then stole second before a Stevens error allowed junior Brian Ware (Beverly, Mass.) to reach, while allowing the Townsend, Mass. native to score.

A John Phelan (Walpole, Mass.) bunt single followed by a Ricky Graham (Walpole, Mass.) walk loaded the bases before another Ducks’ error plated two more runs. Stevens cut the deficit to three in the fifth on Rasulo’s two-out, RBI triple down the rightfield line, but two more Falcon runs in the top half off the sixth on a Bamforth single and another Ducks’ error made it 7-2.

Stevens tacked on a pair of runs, scoring on a fielder’s choice and a Daniele RBI single in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively, but it was not enough, as Fitchburg secured its first win of the season.

The Ducks scored four runs on 11 hits and two Fitchburg errors, while the Falcons tallied seven runs on 12 hits and a season-high six Stevens’ miscues.

Bamforth and Foster each went 2-for-5 on the day, with Bamforth adding two RBI. Mercier finished 2-for-5 as well, with an RBI and a run scored.

Senior Nick Ryan (Lowell, Mass.) picked up the win for the Falcons, going six innings, while allowing three runs on eight hits.
