Box Score vs. Old Westbury - May 6, 2010

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (May 6, 2010) – Junior rightfielder Russ Grimes of the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team set the program’s single-season record for homeruns as the Ducks captured their sixth-straight victory of the season with a 10-3 triumph over SUNY Old Westbury. Grimes, who entered the game one roundtripper shy of tying the school mark, finished 3-for-5 on the day with a pair of homers to set the Stevens’ record. The Ducks, who face Empire 8 rival Utica College in a four-game set on May 8-9, are now 18-18 overall on the season.

After three scoreless innings, Stevens opened it up with a four run fourth. Grimes got things started with a one-out homer to left before sophomore Sal Amato singled and sophomore shortstop Corey Linden drew a two-out walk. Junior second baseman Mike Pagliaro then reached on an error before senior Anthony Andrews belted a bases-clearing double down the leftfield line.

Stevens upped the margin to six in the fifth, when Grimes smashed his record-breaking ninth homerun of the season with one out and one on. The Panthers sliced the lead to four in the sixth when back-to-back lead-off singles by juniors Jason Kondra (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and Melvin Simmons (Bronx, N.Y.) were followed up by a Giovanni Jimenez (Brentwood, N.Y.) base-hit to left, plating Old Westbury’s first run. Junior first baseman Josef Schaetzle (Bellmore, N.Y.) later singled home the Panthers second run with one-out.

The Ducks tacked on two runs in the top half of the eighth on a T.J. Alcorn two-out single to left center before adding a pair of scores in the ninth on a Linden double to left center and an Andrews single through the left side.

Andrews tied a single-game record with five hits and four RBI on the day, while Grimes went 3-for-5 with two homers. Junior catcher Denis Ackermann had a pair of hits, while Alcorn and Pagliaro combined for four hits, three runs scored, and an RBI. Senior Mark Rasulo, Linden, and Amato also recorded hits in the win.

Jimenez, Simmons, and Kondra each had two hits apiece to lead Old Westbury, while Schaetzle finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Poinsett moved to 4-0 on the year, going five and two thirds, surrendering just two earned runs, while Panthers’ junior starter Marvin Rosario (Lynbrook, N.Y.) fell to 6-3 on the year.
