ROCHESTER, N.Y. (May 11, 2010) – Junior Russ Grimes of the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team was recently named the Empire 8 Player of the Week for the second time this season after helping the Ducks’ extend their win-steak to eight with a 4-0 stretch-run to close out the regular season. The South Brunswick, N.J. native was instrumental in helping Stevens’ earn its second ECAC Metro Tournament berth, hitting .632, with three homeruns, and 10 RBI.
The junior rightfielder began the week with a 3-for-6 outing against John Jay College – finishing the game with a homerun and five RBI. Grimes, already the team’s career homerun king, then went 3-for-3 with two homers and three RBI against SUNY Old Westbury – setting the Ducks’ single-season homerun record. He capped off the week by going 6-for-8 with two runs scored, a pair of stolen bases, and an RBI in a doubleheader sweep of John Jay.
Having started all 38 games in right for Stevens this season, Grimes currently leads the team in runs (35), RBI (38), homeruns (9), and total bases (81), while ranking second in hits (45). His program record nine homers are tops in the Empire 8, while his 38 runs-batted-in rank second.
The fourth-seeded Ducks play host to fifth-seeded Old Westbury in the opening round of the 2010 ECAC Metro Tournament on Wednesday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. on Dobbelaar Baseball Field in Hoboken, N.J.
