Box Score vs. Juniata - August 31, 2007

HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 31, 2007) – Sophomore Kara Borzillo scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 67th minute Friday night as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated 14th-ranked Juniata College by a 2-1 count in the season-opener as well as Day One of the 2007 Stevens Field Hockey Tournament.

Stevens (1-0) opened up the scoring just before time expired in the first half when sophomore forward and 2006 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year Courtney Geddis pushed a three-yard shot into the right side of the cage on a feed from junior defenseman Casey Scherck.

In the second stanza, Juniata (0-1) retaliated with a score of its own at the 12:18 mark as senior forward  Leslie Stern (Felton, Pa.) took the ball down the left side of the field and proceeded to put a six-yard shot past Ducks’ goaltender Ellyn Griggs to knot the contest up at 1-1.

Nine minutes later, Stevens put the game away for good when junior midfielder Hillary Paul found Borzillo in front of the net. Borzillo placed a two-yard tally past Juniata keeper Abby Funk (Lewisburg, Pa.).

Funk made a game-high four saves for the Eagles, while Griggs stopped one and got the win in the decision.

Head Coach Jessica Reed and the Ducks return to action tomorrow when they host the Lakers of SUNY Oswego in Day Two of the Stevens Field Hockey Tournament. The opening face-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The game will be carried live at www.empire8.tv. This contest will be immediately followed by Haverford College taking on Juniata at 7:30 p.m.
