HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 1, 2007) – Sophomore forward Courtney Geddis and freshman forward Lauren Griggs each notched a pair of tallies Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team won its second straight contest, defeating SUNY Oswego by a final score of 6-0.
The Ducks (2-0), who out-shot the Lakers (1-1) by a 42-0 count in the contest, opened up the scoring in the second minute of the match when junior midfielder Allison Shields smacked a shot from the top of the circle into the left side of the cage. Sophomore forward Kara Borzillo gave Stevens a 2-0 advantage at the 16:58 mark when she deflected a Geddis shot into the right corner of the net.
In the second period, Geddis wasted no time getting back to work. At the 26:48 mark, she pushed a six-yarder into the top left corner of the cage on an unassisted effort. Two minutes later, Geddis struck again to give the Ducks a 4-0 lead after connecting on a ball that found its way into the bottom left corner of the net.
Then, in the 55th-minute, Griggs collected her first collegiate goal when she scored on an unassisted attempt. Seven minutes later, she registered her second goal of the contest after deflecting a Borzillo shot into the back of the cage.
Oswego freshman goaltender Sarah Hafter (Johnstown, N.Y.) made 11 saves on the afternoon, while Stevens keepers Ellyn Griggs and Stephanie Smith combined for a shut-out.
Head Coach Jessica Reed and the Ducks return to action this Wednesday, when they host Western Connecticut State University at the De Baun Athletic Complex. The opening face-off is slated for 7 p.m.
