FAIRFAX, Va. (July 13, 2010) – Rising senior Mohamed Abuouf of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s track and field program was named to the prestigious 2010 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports-Scholar Awards Third-Team. The award honors undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. To be eligible, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
It is the second time Abuouf has been honored by the organization, as he was named to the team after the 2007-08 season as well. Abuouf, a mechanical engineering major, boasts a 3.3 cumulative GPA and a 3.6 average in the fall of 2009. He took last season off from competition to focus on a co-op research opportunity, but did not miss a step on the track during his return, provisionally qualifying for the Outdoor NCAA’s in the 110-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 14.81 seconds in 2010. It was the first time a Stevens runner had broken the 15-second barrier in that event.
Serving as captain this past year for both the indoor and outdoor squads, Abuouf set three new school-records during the Ducks’ 2009-10 winter season and two more in the spring of 2010, qualifying for the ECAC’s in both seasons. In total, he owns seven individual and relay records at Stevens.
