TOWSON, Md. (November 18, 2009) – Junior goalkeeper Zach Carr of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team was named a first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American on Wednesday afternoon. Carr is the first-ever Stevens men’s soccer player to receive first-team Academic All-America honors as the Stevens keeper currently holds a 3.91 cumulative grade-point average as a Biomedical Engineering major at one of the top engineering institutions in the nation. Carr is one of only 12 NCAA Division III men’s soccer players to receive the highest academic honor in collegiate athletics.

Carr, a first-team All-Empire 8 selection, has only improved upon an already stellar playing career in 2009 as he and the rest of the Ducks ready themselves for the round of 16 in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship.

In 2009, the Stevens junior has a goals-against average of 0.33 and a record of 17-3-1. He has pitched 15 shutouts and made 63 saves while allowing a grand total of just seven goals in 21 games.

Only in his third year as a member of the Ducks, Carr is already the leader in Stevens program history in goals-against average and shutouts (38). His overall record is 53-7-8 and he has accumulated 182 saves in his career.

He has received academic honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the Empire 8 the last two seasons and was also named to the first-ever Stevens President’s List last winter.

“Zach is the consummate student-athlete - an exceptional student and soccer player,” Head Men’s Soccer Coach Tim O’Donohue said. “We are very proud to have him in our program and to represent Stevens soccer.”

Carr is third in the nation in goals-against average (0.329) and sixth in save percentage (0.90) as he and the entire Stevens defensive unit ranks third in GAA (0.33) and shutout percentage (0.71).

The only other player this decade to receive Academic All-America recognition was Josh Ottinger ‘04, who received a second-team nod once (2002) and was selected to the third-team twice (2003, 2004). There are only 24 men’s soccer players across the United States that receive this honor (12 in the college division (DIII), 12 in the university (DI/II).

Stevens (17-3-1) recently defeated Montclair State University, 4-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to its second-straight Sectional semifinal (sixth in seven years). Stevens will take on Christopher Newport University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in York, Pa. The winner of that game will take on the winner of Williams College vs. York College (Pa.) in the Sectional final on Sunday at 1 p.m.
