Gomez Named ITA Northeast Assistant Coach of the Year
SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association recently announced its Division III Award Winners as Assistant Coach Francisco Gomez of the Stevens Institute of Technology tennis programs was selected as the Northeast ITA Assistant Men’s Coach of the Year. In his two years at Stevens, Gomez has helped to guide both the men’s and women’s tennis programs to a combined record of 56-25. While at Stevens, Gomez has taken graduate classes and is anticipating his commencement on May 21, where he will receive a Master’s of Science degree in Management with a concentration in Project Management.
Zeevy and Ringstad Earn First-Team Honors as Men's Tennis Name Five Members to Empire 8 All-Conference Team
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Empire 8 recently announced the 2009 Men’s Tennis All-Conference Team as sophomore Arik Zeevy of Stevens Institute of Technology earned first-team honors for both singles and doubles play. Zeevy repeated as a first-team choice in singles, having posted an 8-1 conference mark at No. 1 singles and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional Championship. Overall, Stevens named five of its players to the Empire 8 all-conference team.
Men's Tennis Falls to Ithaca in Empire 8 Championship
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Arik Zeevy could not overcome junior Taylor Borda at first singles as the match was decided by the 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory from Borda to send Ithaca College into the 2009 NCAA Tournament with a 5-3 win over the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team during the Empire 8 Championship on Sunday morning in Rochester, N.Y. The match was almost knotted at 4-4 as junior Piotr Rusinkiewicz was leading freshman Jimmy Newton (7-5, 6-7 (1), 4-2) at No. 2 singles before Borda’s victory over Zeevy clinched the match for the Bombers. Ithaca moves to 17-4 overall, while the Ducks finish 14-5 on the year.
Men's Tennis Advances to Finals of Empire 8 Championship with 9-0 Win over RIT
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Jason Ringstad clinched the match for the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team to help propel the Ducks into the Finals of the Empire 8 Championship for the second-consecutive year. Ringstad upended junior John Traver at second singles (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) to pick up his 14th singles victory of the season as Stevens swept Rochester Institute of Technology Saturday morning to setup a rematch against regular-season champion, Ithaca College on Sunday at 10 a.m. in Rochester, N.Y. The Ducks fell to the Bombers, 6-3 during regular-season play as Stevens (14-4) will look to avenge the loss to claim its second Empire 8 title and automatic bid into the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
Stevens Tennis Program Gives Back to Hoboken
HOBOKEN, N.J. – On Saturday, April 25, the Stevens Institute of Technology tennis program hosted its complimentary junior tennis clinic for the Hoboken community. Over 20 enthusiastic youngsters took the courts with Stevens’ men’s and women’s tennis players to learn the basics and fundamentals of tennis. This is the second year that the tennis program has offered the educational seminar.
