Men's Tennis Begins Fall 2008 Season with Loss at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (February 17, 2008) – On Sunday afternoon, the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team opened the spring season with a 9-0 loss at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. With the win, the Brewers improved to 2-1 on the year. The Ducks are now 0-1.

At first doubles, senior Ricky Bawa and freshman Zhi Ko lost to freshmen Max Willner (Bronx, N.Y.) and Gregory Katz (Baldwin, N.Y.) by the score of 8-1. Sophomore Piotr Rusinkiewicz and freshman Arik Zeevy dropped a close 8-6 match to sophomore Michael Mattelson (Great Neck, N.Y.) and senior Ashish Patil (Silsbee, Texas) at No. 2 doubles. In the third-doubles position, junior Jeremy Rosen (Paramus, N.J.) and freshman Joshua Jasso (Olmito, Texas) defeated freshmen Jay Lee and Jason Ringstad, 8-6.

At first singles, Mattelson topped Ko in straight-sets (6-3, 6-2). Willner defeated Zeevy 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Bawa fell to Katz in the third flight by the score of 6-1, 6-2. Patil earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rusinkiewicz at fourth singles. Rosen claimed a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Ringstad at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Robert Babbage (Lexington, Ky.) dropped the first set then rallied for a 6-7 (7-9), 6-1, 10-1 win against Lee at sixth singles.

Stevens will return to action when it takes part in the Drew University Invitational on Saturday and Sunday in Madison, N.J.
