Ringstad's Singles Victory Lifts Men's Tennis to First Win of the Season

BABSON PARK, Mass. (March 2, 2008) – With the overall match tied at 4-4, freshman Jason Ringstad posted a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over sophomore Brian Lafayette (Burlington, Vt.) in leading the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team to a 5-4 win over Babson College on Sunday at the Babson Sports Club in Babson Park, Mass. The Ducks now stand at 1-2 on the year. The Beavers dropped to 2-4 with the loss.

At No. 1 doubles, senior Ricky Bawa and sophomore Piotr Rusinkiewicz dropped an 8-5 decision to sophomore Alex Kamergorodsky (Millis, Mass.) and Lafayette. Freshmen Zhi Wei Ko and Jay Lee followed with an 8-4 win at second doubles over seniors Walt Sea (Stuart, Fla.) and Ben Edick (Delray Beach, Fla.). Babson captured third doubles as sophomore Ken Lin (Cavendish Heights, Hong Kong) and freshman Austin Conti (Murray Hill, N.J.) knocked off junior Kobe Attias and Ringstad by the score of 8-2.

Ko led off No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kamergorodsky. Bawa won the first set before falling to Edick in three sets at second singles. Edick won that match 3-6, 6-2, 10-7. Rusinkiewicz defeated Lin in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) at No. 3 singles. Lee topped Conti at fifth singles by the score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Babson sophomore Edwin Lee (Mukilteo, Wash.) posted a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory over Attias at No. 6 singles.

Stevens will return to the court on Wednesday when it travels to Haverford, Pa., to take on Haverford College at 3 p.m.
