Bawa Records Sixth Singles Win of the Year as Men's Tennis Falls to Tufts in Orlando
ORLANDO, Fla. (March 19, 2008) – Playing without three of its starters in the singles lineup, the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss to Tufts University on Wednesday afternoon in Orlando, Fla. The loss dropped the Ducks’ record to 3-5 overall. The Jumbos improved to 4-2 on the season. Senior Ricky Bawa picked up the lone win for Stevens as he defeated senior William Fleder (New York, N.Y.) in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-2) at No. 1 singles.
At first doubles, Bawa and sophomore Piotr Rusinkiewicz lost to freshman Paul Kohnstamm (Larchmont, N.Y.) and Fleder by the score of 8-2. Meanwhile, freshmen Jay Lee and Jason Ringstad dropped an 8-4 match to freshmen Tony Carucci (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Cyril Jacob Fountain (Nassau, Bahamas) at second doubles. In the third-doubles contest, junior Kobe Attias and freshman Carlo Pardo were defeated 8-2 by sophomore Daniel Landers (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman Tom Wilmanski (Warsaw, Poland).
Outside of Bawa’s win at the top of the lineup, the Ducks dropped the remaining five singles matches. Fountain needed two sets (6-0, 6-2) to beat Rusinkiewicz at No. 2 singles. Lee lost to Carucci by the score of 6-1, 6-4 at third singles. Attias fell to sophomore Andrew Rosen (Armonk, N.Y.) in two sets (6-2, 6-2) at fourth singles. Landers followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Pardo at No. 5 singles. Freshman Ryan Wilson filled in the singles lineup in the sixth position and lost to Wilmanski 6-3, 6-2.
Stevens wrapped up its four-match trip to Florida with a 2-2 mark. The Ducks are slated to return to action on March 26 when they host Drew University at 3:30 p.m.
