Men's Tennis Downs Connecticut, 7-2; Stevens Falls to Wisconsin-La Crosse, 8-1 3/18/2008 Contact: Ian Schraier Files associated with this release: ORLANDO, Fla. (March 18, 2008) – On Tuesday, senior Ricky Bawa won both of his singles matches as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team split a pair of contests in Orlando, Fla, despite playing without its top-two singles players in freshmen Zhi Wei Ko and Arik Zeevy. The Ducks fell to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse by an 8-1 final before picking up a 7-2 victory over Connecticut College. Bawa beat Eagles’ senior Mike Mooren (Brookfield, Wis.) and Camels’ junior David Kellogg (Kula, Hawaii) in straight sets. In the match against UW-La Crosse (7-3), Bawa and sophomore Piotr Rusinkiewicz lost by a 9-7 final to senior Dale Wroblewski (Oconomowoc, Wis.) and sophomore Joey Van Lieshout (Neenah, Wis.) in the first doubles flight. At the second-doubles position, freshman Jay Lee and junior Kobe Attias lost to Mooren and freshman Nathan Fekete (Menomonie, Wis.) by an 8-2 decision. Freshmen Jason Ringstad and Carlo Pardo were defeated by senior Mike Frenzel (New Hope, Minn.) and junior Taylor Schliewe (Horicon, Wis.), 8-3, at No. 3 doubles. After Bawa out-lasted Mooren at first singles (7-5, 6-4), Van Lieshout recorded a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Rusinkiewicz in the second flight. At No. 3 singles, Wroblewski topped Ringstad in straight-sets (6-2, 6-1). Lee fell in a tough three-set match to Fekete, who won by a score of 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in the fourth-singles position. Attias also went down in a remarkable three-setter to junior Paul Vickers (Hartland, Wis.), who won 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (20-18) at fifth singles. In the sixth flight, junior Doug Marmar (Woodbury, Minn.) posted a 6-0, 6-3 win against Pardo. In the Connecticut match, Stevens (3-4) received a strong all-around performance as Bawa and Rusinkewicz got things going with a 8-5 decision over junior Ted McAusher (Mystic, Conn.) and Kellogg at No. 1 doubles. Lee and Ringstad followed with a 9-7 victory at second doubles against freshman Craig Stanton (Warwick, R.I.) and sophomore Reid Larsen (Watertown, Mass.). The Camels (1-3) captured the third flight as freshman Trevor Prophet (Nashua, N.H.) and sophomore Jason Sprung (New York, N.Y.) knocked off Pardo and Attias by the score of 8-5. Bawa led off No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Kellogg. Rusinkiewicz defeated Prophet in straight-sets at second singles by the score of 6-1, 7-6 (8-6). McAusher earned a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory against Ringstad at the third-singles position. At No. 4 singles, Lee rolled past Stanton 6-2, 7-5. Attias came out with a win in three sets [6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8)] over Larsen at fifth singles. Pardo posted a 7-5, 6-1 decision against sophomore Sam Stelk (Marblehead, Mass.) during the sixth-singles competition. The Ducks return to action tomorrow when they wrap up their spring trip with a match against Tufts University. First serve is slated for noon. |
