USTA Middle States Sectional Qualifying Tournament Final Release
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. (June 28, 2010) – Freshman Chris Rosensteel of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team recently enjoyed a remarkable run through the United States Tennis Association Middle States US Open Sectional Qualifying Tournament, advancing to the finals of the five-day championship held at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J.
The East Windsor, N.J. native opened tournament play with a 6-0, 6-3, win over Marc Vecchiolla (Robbinsville, N.J.) before upending Spencer Rhoads (Reading, Pa.) – who retired due to injury – 6-3, 2-0 and Robert Weise (Wall Township, N.J.), 6-1, 6-1.
Rosensteel then defeated Chris Hoeland (Princeton, N.J.), 6-4, 7-6 (6), in the quarterfinals before scoring a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, come-from-behind semifinal victory over Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J.) – currently the nation’s 13th ranked prospect according to the Tennis Recruiting Network.
Hoeland, a recent Washington University in St. Louis graduate and three-time NCAA All-America selection, compiled a program record 104-30 career doubles mark and 64-27 career singles tally, while helping to lead the Bears to a Division III national championship in 2008 before joining the Princeton University men’s tennis staff as an assistant coach in 2009-10.
Rosensteel’s run finally came to an end with a 6-0, 6-2, loss in the tournament final against 31-year-old Punch Maleka (King of Prussia, Pa.), a former South African Davis Cup team member once ranked No. 619 in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
The USTA Middle States’ Sectional Qualifying Tournament's 128-man field is one of 16 US Open Sectional Qualifying Tournaments held across the country – serving as the first step for hopefuls competing for a wildcard into the US Open.
Rosensteel entered the tournament after completing a record-breaking rookie campaign on the Hudson. The freshman phenom helped Stevens to a record 18 wins in 2009-10, setting single-season school records in both singles (27) and doubles (20), while helping the Ducks to their second Empire 8 Championship and NCAA Tournament berth.
