HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 7, 2008) – On Monday afternoon, the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference announced the field for the 2008 Men’s Volleyball South Region Championship. Stevens Institute of Technology has earned the top overall seed for the four-team tournament and will host Bard College on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Ducks took down the Raptors earlier in the season in a 3-0 decision as junior outside hitter John Dennan posted 10 kills in the win.
Stevens registered a 20-11 record as it was recently knocked off in the quarterfinals of the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Championship by No. 9 Ramapo College this past weekend. The Ducks were ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top-15 Division III poll for the entire season. Stevens entered the NECVA tournament as the fourth seed and was riding a ten-match winning streak. The Ducks finished second in the Metro Division with an 8-1 mark.
Bard went 17-12 on the season and won the Skyline Conference Championship in its first season in the league. Seeded No. 1 in the tournament, the Raptors defeated Purchase College in its semifinal match. Bard topped The College of Mount Saint Vincent in a well-played three-set championship match. The Raptors received the fourth seed for the Saturday’s ECAC tournament.
Hunter received the eighth seed heading into the NECVA Championship with a 30-3 record after they won the City University of New York Athletic Conference title. The Hawks had their 24-match win streak snapped when they fell to Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the first round of the tournament by a 3-2 decision. They were awarded the two-seed and will play Baruch College at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinal round of the ECAC Tournament.
Baruch entered the NECVA Tournament as the No.15 seed with an overall record of 21-12. The Bearcats dropped a four-game match to Philadelphia Biblical University in the first round of the tournament. Baruch lost to Hunter in the championship match of the CUNYAC Championship. The Bearcats are slated the three seed for Saturday’s action and will have an opportunity to avenge their loss when they face the Hawks in the semifinals of the ECAC Tournament.
