2010 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Release
TOWSON, Md. (June 9, 2010) – Junior co-captain Brandt Grobeis of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s volleyball team continued to add to his growing list of postseason accolades after recently capturing College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine Second-Team Academic All-America At-Large honors.
A two-time CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District At-Large selection, Grobeis – also an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) second-team All-American in 2009 – helped lead Stevens to a 13th-consecutive North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Tournament berth and a 20-12 overall mark.
In order to be eligible for CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine All-Academic honors, student-athletes must be an important starter or reserve with a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games. Academic All-America selections are then chosen from a pool of first-team All-District honorees.
CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine selects Academic All-America teams in 12 sports at both the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA, and 2-year) divisions. CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Men’s Academic All-America At-Large selections are made from a pool of 12 sports, including: golf, ice hockey, swimming, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, and water polo.
Grobeis, one of just 45 student-athletes in Divisions II/III, NAIA, and two-year colleges to receive Academic All-America honors and the only volleyball player to be recognized in the College Division's All-America teams, garnered District 2, College Division, first-team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District recognition earlier this year.
The Livingston, N.J. native enjoyed another stellar season at Castle Point as the Ducks’ primary setter, finishing sixth nationally in assists per set (12.18). The junior racked up 1,267 assists on the season – ranking fifth on the program’s single-season charts – tallying 30-plus assists 24 times and 40-plus assists on 17 occasions. With four double-doubles on the year, Grobeis surpassed the 50-assist plateau 11 times and had at least 60 helpers in three matches.
Named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week during the week of February 9, Grobeis finished sixth on the squad in digs per set (1.67) and third in service aces (24) and total blocks (78.0). The junior co-captain, a 2010 All-NECVA Metro Division second-team selection, was named the Stevens men’s volleyball Most Valuable Player during 2010 season – while moving into third-place all-time on Stevens’ career assists charts with 3,183.
The business and technology major has enjoyed an equal amount of success off the court, holding a 3.94 cumulative grade-point average at the time of his nomination – after being named to the All-NECVA All-Academic team for the second-consecutive season.
Grobeis, who garnered recognition on the Dean’s List, the President’s List, and Dean’s Activities List, is also a recipient of the Myron F Dallen Memorial Scholarship, the Milton Eames Oliver Scholarship, and the Presidential Scholarship.
As a member of the Student-Faculty Alliance, Grobeis has remained active in the campus community, having served as a Resident Assistant, a student tutor, and a student assistant coach on the Ducks’ women’s volleyball program.
