Equestrian Set To Open 2009-10 Season

The Stevens Institute of Technology equestrian team is primed and ready to begin the 2009-10 season when it travels to the Drew University and Sarah Lawrence College Show on Sunday, October 4. The program, now in its seventh year of existence, will be led by a trio of seniors who have the experience and ability to lead the team to a strong finish at many events and in Zone II, Region I.

The first senior is team leader and captain Rosemary Garofalo (Springfield, N.J.). Garofalo has qualified for the Regional Championship Show two times in her three previous years and took sixth at the Regional last spring in intermediate flat.

“Rosemary is the leader of this team, and I know that she will lead in competition, on campus, and in the classroom,” said Zwaan. “She is involved on the Stevens campus and will be a great voice for our sport.”

As a freshman, Garofalo was the first-ever Stevens equestrian athlete to earn champion high-point rider of the day honors after taking first place in novice flat and novice fences at one of the All-Region Shows at Briarwood Farm.

Standout senior Kahri Olsen (Boonton Township, N.J.) has been the Ducks’ most prolific rider of late and has qualified for the Zone Regional Championship three years in a row. Olsen was the only Stevens rider to compete last year after taking second in open fences at the Regional Championship Show to advance. In 2007-08 Olsen rode in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Zones in intermediate fences and open flat.

The final senior on the roster is Constance Maglaras (Flushing, N.Y.). Maglaras has made strides each year she has been a member of the team and will look to contribute in the walk-trot. Two years ago, Maglaras reached the Regional Championship and is eyeing a return in 2009-10.

The junior class will be led by Jamie Fishbein (Cranbury, N.J.) and Angela Pariott (Sparta, N.J.). As a freshman in 2007-08, Fishbein qualified for the Regional Championship show in the advanced walk-trot canter and also earned a first-place finish in the All-Region show. Parriott qualified for the Regional in the advanced walk-trot canter last year and also had a first in novice fences at the William Paterson University Show. She will look to continue making great strides this year.

Junior Madalyn Kulas (Flemington, N.J.) is in her second season as a member of the team and will look to continue the great improvement she showed in a limited action last season.

Zwaan will also welcome several newcomers in junior Rachel Kenion (Palmerton, Pa.) and freshman Elizabeth Krawczun (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Stevens will compete at seven events this fall beginning with the Drew/Sarah Lawrence Show on October 4 where the Ducks took fifth a season ago. They will then compete in the All-Region show after a week off on October 18 at Briarwood Farm in Readington, N.J. On October 25, Stevens will compete in the William Paterson Show and will look to improve upon its fifth-place finish in 2008-09.

The Ducks will participate in the United States Military Academy Show at the Centenary College Equestrian Center in Long Valley, N.J. on Halloween before visiting Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and the Marist College Show on November 15.

Stevens will host the Stevens Institute of Technology Show at the Centenary College Equestrian Center on November 21 before heading back to Briarwood Farm and the SUNY New Paltz Show the following day in the final event of the fall.

The Ducks will return to competitive action in late February at shows that are yet to be announced.
