Laura Sodon Recognized as EWFC Woman of the Year
Hoboken, N.J. - Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Commissioner Damion Jones has announced the selection of Stevens Institute of Technology senior Laura Sodon as the recipient of the league's second EWFC Woman of the Year award. This honor - implemented to annually recognize the senior fencer who best combines the triple standards of excellence in academics, success in athletics, and participation in extracurricular activities - was decided through a postseason vote by the conference's head coaches.
Cannell Takes 15th as Women's Fencing Posts Solid Outing at NCAA Regional Championships
MADISON, N.J. – Senior epeeist Rachel Cannell of the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s fencing team was the fourth highest Division III fencer to finish at the 2009 NCAA Regional Championships on Saturday afternoon, hosted by Drew University in Madison, N.J. Cannell placed 15th overall within a very competitive this year. She just missed qualifying for the Finals at the top 12 of each weapon advances on to tomorrow’s competition.
Men's and Women's Fencing NCAA Bound
HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s and women’s fencing team will once again head to the NCAA Regional Championships hosted by Drew University in Madison, N.J. this weekend. Last season the women sent five of its fencers that qualified as they increased their number to seven for this year’s competition. The men had four NCAA qualifiers a season ago and will send seven as well, to this Friday’s event that will last all day. Senior epeeist Rachel Cannell will look to improve on her 11th-place showing from last year’s performance after she made history as the second women in the programs 35-year existence to have reached the final round of the NCAA Regional. On the men side, senior Lowden Charles became the first foilist in Stevens’ history to have reached the NCAA Finals during last season, as he is eager to advance further into final round.
Women's Fencing Earns Bronze in Best Finish Ever at NIWFA Championships
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s fencing team took third out of 17 squads that competed in this year’s National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association Championships held in New York, N.Y. on Sunday. Senior epeeist Rachel Cannell finished in fourth-place as both the foil and epee squads took fifth overall, while sabre recorded its best finish ever of sixth. As a result, the Ducks tallied 16 points as a team to place third. Temple University received the gold medal with three points and Johns Hopkins claimed silver with eight points; the fewer the points, the higher the placing. Individually, Temple swept in all three weapons, having earned gold medals across the board.
Women's Fencing Hosts 12th Annual Stevens Invite and 3rd Annual EWFC Individual Invite; Six Fencers Take Home All-Conference Honors
HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s fencing team hosted the 3rd annual Eastern Collegiate Women’s Fencing Conference Individual Championships and the 12 annual Stevens Invite Sunday afternoon in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks had a stellar outing as six fencers earned all-conference honors. In addition, Stevens had eight other fencers take home medals as they competed in the “substitute pool” of the Stevens Invitational.
