HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 7, 2008) – Junior midfielder Salme Cook opened up the offensive attack for the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team as she posted a pair of goals (4) to lift the Ducks to a 3-0 win over Ursinus College on Sunday during the final day of the 5th-annual Stevens Engineering Cup. With the victory Stevens moves to 2-1-1 on the season as Ursinus falls to 0-3. Earlier in the day, New York University clinched the Cup with its 1-0 win against Middlebury and broke the four-year streak the Ducks held in claiming the Engineering Title.

At the 4:59 mark, Cook collected a long lead pass from junior midfielder Erica Risch and buried it in the back of the net after having beaten senior goalkeeper Lisa Clark (Media, Pa.) on a one-on-one to record her third goal of the season.

Just 10 seconds before the end of the first half, sophomore midfielder Kathryn Stascavage notched her first goal of her collegiate career in her first college game on a short pass from sophomore forward Kara Pepe. Pepe controlled the ball 10 yards out and dished it to Stascavage who fired it through the lower left corner.

Cook registered her second goal of the game and fourth of the season at the 72nd-minute mark off an assist by sophomore forward Katria Misilo. Cook gathered a soft pass from Misilo from 15 yards out and was able to knock it through for the final score of the game.

Much credit goes to the Ducks defense as they held Ursinus to just seven shots, two of which were on goal. Stevens registered 18 shots (12 on goal) and out cornered the Bears 6-4.

In goal for the Ducks were sophomore keeper Jenn Pontier and freshman Kaitlin McClymont. Pontier got the start and the win (2-0-1) for her 61:30 minutes of action having totaled a pair of saves. McClymont came into the second half and had a solid performance.

Misilo was chosen the tournament’s offensive most valuable player for her stellar play throughout the tournament. She registered the game-tying goal against Middlebury in addition to her assist against the Bears. On the defensive side, sophomore forward Laura Palumbo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was selected as the co-offensive MVP from NYU.

Stevens will be back in action on Saturday when they host Vassar College at 7 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J. as the Ducks welcome back their alumnae. All the night’s action can be seen live at www.Empire8.tv.

NYU defeats Middlebury 1-0

Senior forward Sarah Pillermer ( Ithaca, N.Y. ) tallied the winning goal at the 81st minute to give the Violets of NYU a 1-0 win over Middlebury. With its 4-2 win against Ursinus College yesterday and today’s victory over Middlebury, NYU clinched this year’s Engineering Cup. As a result of today’s victory, the Violets improve to 2-2 on the year as the Panthers are now 0-1-1.

With just under nine minutes left in regulation, Pillemer was able to net her second goal of the season off a rebound after sophomore forward Laura Palumbo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tried to put it past senior goalkeeper Adele Plunkett (Austin, Texas). Palumbo received a nice cross from sophomore midfielder Filiz Kipcakli (Port Washington, N.Y.) from seven yards out and fired it as Plunkett could not grasp the ball. Pillemer was there for the easy tap in, which secured the win and broke the four-year win streak that Stevens has held in claiming the Cup.

NYU held the advantage in shots (13-7) and corners (6-2) as both teams had some golden opportunities to find the back of the net however some tough defense kept the door closed. Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Walters (Babylon, N.Y.) posted two saves on the day and played the full 90 minutes, while Plunkett pulled in five saves and was in the net for the entire game.
