2009 NCAA Women's Qualifying Standards

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (February 19, 2009) – The No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology women’s swimming team opened competition at the 2009 New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association/Empire 8 Championships in Syracuse, N.Y. on Thursday and did not disappoint. Stevens is currently in second place overall with 367 points, trailing only Ithaca College. Stevens set school-records and hit NCAA B-cuts in all five events on the day and also took two first-place finishes. Sophomore Laura Barito time trialed the 50-yard freestyle after placing second overall and carded a 23.39, good for an NCAA A-cut that guarantees her a trip to the 2009 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

Stevens is second to Ithaca College in the NYSWCAA Championships and the Empire 8 Championships as the two events are run in conjunction with each other. Seven Empire 8 schools compete in both championships and 16 schools fight it out for the NYSWCAA title.

In Thursday’s prelims, the Ducks swam extremely well, setting five program-records and hitting five more NCAA qualifying marks.

The 200-yard freestyle relay squad of freshmen Hayley Hatfield and Cailin Grunewald, senior captain Emily Woo
, and Barito touched at 1:35.92, good for a new school-record and an NCAA B-cut. The finish also made the Ducks the top seed in the final.

In the 500-yard freestyle prelim, freshman Sian Pearson took the No. 1 spot and set a new school-record. Her time of 5:03.40 was more than seven seconds better than the second-place finisher, teammate Cailin Grunewald. Pearson’s time was good for a B-cut as the Ducks sent four athletes to the finals (Pearson, Grunewald, sophomore Amanda Nauman, and sophomore Mary Chew).

Woo bested her own school-record in the 200-yard individual medley, touching at 2:08.95, more than three seconds faster than her previous mark. She placed third overall and her finish was also good enough for a B-cut.

In the 50-yard freestyle, both Barito and Hatfield hit a B-cut, taking first and fourth, respectively. Barito bested her own previous school record of 24.31 by touching the wall at 23.80 and Hatfield carded a 24.30.

The final school-record of the opening session came in the 400-yard medley relay as Stevens finished fourth overall with a time of 4:02.12. Freshman Andrea Sturniolo, juniors Stephanie Miller and Gabrielle Czernik, and Hatfield combined to beat the previous program-best by almost five seconds.

In the day’s finals, Stevens continued to swim well. The 200-yard freestyle relay team won the event, turning in a time of 1:36.25. Hatfield, Grunewald, Woo, and Barito earned the team 64 points with the first-place finish. In the C-final, sophomore Sarah Parker, freshman Deanna Carazza, Pearson, and Miller took the top spot, finishing with a time of 1:39.95 and earning 18 points for the team.

The Ducks took first, second and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle final. Grunewald took almost six seconds off her prelim time to finish in first place (5:04.87) and earn her team 32 points. Pearson was second (5:06.04), and Nauman (5:12.21) was fifth. Chew placed seventh overall, and freshman Kimberly McCaffrey took17th with the best time in C-final.

Woo finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley, carding a 2:10.13 and earning 26 points for the squad, and freshman Toni Diaz turned in a 2:12.22 in finishing first in the C-final.

Barito placed second in the 50-free with a time of 23.75, breaking the school-record she set earlier in the day. Hatfield was sixth, touching the wall at 24.39 (24 points) and Miller was 15th (12 points).

In the final event of the evening, the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Czernik, Miller, Woo, and Hatfield re-broke the school-record set earlier in the day, taking third overall (54 points) with a time of 3:56.87. Czernik led off the event with the 100-yard backstroke and touched at 1:00.38, good for a new school-record.

After the second-place finish in the 50-free, Barito time-trialed the event and hit the A-cut, punching her ticket to the NCAA Championships.

The Ducks will continue competition at the 2009 NYSWCAA/Empire 8 Championships Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. Check StevensDucks.com for a complete recap of the day’s action Saturday night.

Note: The difference between NCAA A- and B-cuts is the following. An A-cut guarantees the person a chance to swim at the NCAA Championships. If enough athletes hit the A-cut, the individuals that hit the B-cut are essentially out of luck. If there are spots left to the filled, those in the B-cut group are selected to compete.
