Stevens Defeats St. John Fisher in Women's Tennis Action

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 9, 2007) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team improved to 5-0 on the year and 4-0 in the Empire 8 with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over St. John Fisher College on Sunday in Rochester, N.Y. The Ducks captured three singles matches and two of three doubles contests to earn the win over the Cardinals, who fell to 2-1 (0-1 Empire 8) with the loss.

Senior Dana Bacalla and freshman Allyson Kingman opened doubles play with an 8-2 win in the first flight. Juniors Whitney Bender and Rebecca Ryba added an 8-6 victory at second doubles. In the third flight, sophomore Natalie Schloeder and freshman Kendra Appleheimer suffered a narrow 9-7 loss to junior Katie Neubeck (Avon, N.Y.) and sophomore Katie Barlow (Lathem, N.Y.).

Bacalla dropped a total of one game in her 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles. Bender needed three sets to knock off senior Alicia Kaucher (Little Falls, N.Y.) by the score of 6-2, 2-6, 10-5 at second singles. Kingman totaled a 6-1, 6-4 win in the third flight for Stevens.

The Ducks will be back in action on Wednesday as they hit the road to take on Kean University at 3:30 p.m. That match will be played in Union, N.J.
