Women's Tennis Blanks Kean to Improve to 6-0 on the Year

HILLSIDE, N.J. (September 12, 2007) – Senior Dana Bacalla, junior Whitney Bender and freshman Allyson Kingman all improved to 6-0 in singles play this season as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team remained unbeaten with a 9-0 victory over Kean University on Wednesday in Hillside, N.J. With the win, the Ducks ran their overall record to 6-0 on the year. The Cougars dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

At No. 1 doubles, Bacalla and Kingman improved to 6-0 as they earned an 8-0 victory over senior Danielle Fardin (Edison, N.J.) and freshman Lisette LaForge (Roselle Park, N.J.). Junior Rebecca Ryba teamed with Bender for an 8-4 win against senior Laura Kuchar (Metuchen, N.J.) and freshman Olivia Shapiro (Beachwood, N.J.) at second doubles. Sophomore Natalie Schloeder and freshman Kendra Appleheimer topped sophomore Michelle Tofel (Union, N.J.) and freshman Katherin Arauz (Newark, N.J.) by the score of 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, Bacalla rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Fardin in the first flight. Bender dropped a total of three games in her 6-0, 6-3 win against LaForge at second singles. Kingman earned a hard-fought 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win over freshman LaShanna Armour (Union, N.J.) in the third flight. Appleheimer rolled past Shapiro (6-1, 6-2) at fourth singles. Ryba was victorious in her match against Arauz in the fifth flight (6-0, 6-4). Schloeder needed three sets to knock off freshman Jessica Oquendo (North Bergen, N.J.) at No. 6 singles. The score of that match was 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 in favor of the Ducks.

Stevens will be back in action this weekend with a pair of matches against Empire 8 foes on the road. On Saturday, the Ducks will play Utica College at 1 p.m. in Utica, N.Y. Stevens will then take on Hartwick College at noon on Sunday in Oneonta, N.Y. The Ducks are currently 4-0 in Empire 8 play.
