NEWARK, N.J. (September 9, 2009) – Junior Allyson Kingman notched a pair of wins in top-flight singles and doubles to help the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team cruise past Rutgers-Newark, 9-0, at the Golden Dome Tennis Courts in Newark, N.J. The Ducks now move to 3-1 on the season, after reeling off three consecutive victories following a season-opening loss to The College of New Jersey, while Rutgers-Newark falls to 0-2 on the year.
Stevens’ sophomore Nicole Portner captured her second straight victory in No. 2 singles, defeating freshman Ashley Lawrence (Frederiksted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands), 6-3, 6-3, while fellow sophomore Mine Bese defeated Scarlet Raider sophomore Mercedes Kuilan (Cedar Grove, N.J.), 6-0, 6-1, in No. 3 singles action.
Junior co-captain Kendra Appleheimer reeled off her third straight victory in fourth-flight singles, sweeping junior Amanda Northrup (Brick, N.J.), 6-0, 6-0, while freshmen Brooke Catanzano and Alexandra Handel continued to impress, also sweeping their Rutgers-Newark counterparts, 6-0, 6-0, in fifth and sixth-flight singles, respectively.
Kingman and Portner headed up the Ducks’ doubles combinations, earning an 8-1 victory in top-flight doubles over Lia Salierno (Clifton, N.J.) and Kuilan, while Catanzano and sophomore Morgan Scalzi downed Northrup and sophomore Wanze Li (Middlesex, N.J.), 8-1. Appleheimer and Handel wrapped up doubles action with an 8-0 win over sophomore Muobo Anidi (East Orange, N.J.) and junior Kelly Chung (Middletown, N.J.).
Stevens will participate in the New Jersey Institute of Technology Invitational in Montclair, N.J. on September 11-13, before looking to capture its fourth consecutive dual-match victory when it plays host to Drew University on September 16.
