Box Score vs. Drew - September 16, 2009

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 16, 2009) – Keyed by junior Allyson Kingman’s wins in first-flight singles and doubles, the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team captured its fourth consecutive dual-match victory with a non-conference win over Drew University at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks are now 4-1 on the season after reeling off four straight wins following a season-opening loss to perennial powerhouse The College of New Jersey.

In the afternoon’s first match, Stevens freshman Brooke Catanzano and sophomore Morgan Scalzi captured their fourth consecutive victory in second-flight doubles with a 8-1 win over Drew’s Laura Ferguson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Hayley Downing. Kingman and sophomore Nicole Portner would then stake the Ducks to a 2-0 advantage with an 8-3 victory in first-flight doubles over Sarit Ashkenazi and Michelle Gbelama (Trenton, N.J.).

Sophomore Mine Bese would keep things rolling in singles play, with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Rebecca Olderman (Cheshire, Conn.) in No. 3 singles, before Catanzano gave the Ducks a commanding 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ferguson in No. 5 singles.

Kingman would then earn her third victory of the season at top-flight singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ashkenazi while junior co-captain Kendra Appleheimer upped the dual-match tally to 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Downing in fourth-flight singles.

Gbelama would account for the Rangers lone victory in the evening’s final match, with a hard-fought 6-7, 7-6, 7-4 win over Portner in second-flight singles. Stevens earned victories in No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles by default.

The Ducks return to action this weekend when they square off with league rivals Alfred University and St. John Fisher College on September 19 and 20, respectively.
