Volk Earns Postgraduate Scholarship Award from NCAA
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Senior women’s volleyball member Melanie Volk of Stevens Institute of Technology was awarded a postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA last week for her outstanding academic record and superb athletic performance this past year. The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. For the fall season, 29 are granted to women, who best exemplify excellence in both academics and athletics.
Volk Reflects on Her Past Four Years at Stevens
HOBOKEN, N.J. – Recently, senior outside hitter Melanie Volk of the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team sat down with graduate assistant for sports information Rich Coyne for a Q & A about her four-year career here at Stevens. Volk will be finishing a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Biology in the spring of 2009. Following commencement, Volk plans on attending law school to follow her dreams of becoming a criminal judge.
Rhode Selected as an ESPN The Magazine Second-Team Academic All-American
HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior right-side hitter Melissa Rhode of the 25th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team, was selected as a first-team recipient to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District in the College Division (District II) by the College Sports Information Directors of America three weeks ago. She was then put on the All-America ballot and was recently chosen as a second-team All-American in the College division by CoSIDA. Rhode has been a four-year all-star for the Ducks as she helped to guide the team to NCAA appearances in each of her years in a Duck uniform. Furthermore, she helped to produce a pair of New York Regional titles in 2006 and 2007.
Rhode, Volk and Byrne Earn AVCA Honors; OConnell Named AVCA New York Region Coach of the Year
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Recently, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced both the 2008 All-New York Region team as well as its All-American selections as Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team received three recipients from its starting lineup. Seniors Melissa Rhode and Melanie Volk as well as sophomore Sarah Byrne were All-New York Region selections and AVCA honorable mention All-Americans. Head Coach J.J. O’Connell was selected the 2008 AVCA New York Region Coach of the Year as he holds a 197-53 record through his seven years as head coach at Stevens.
Women's Volleyball Drops a Heartbreaker to Fredonia, 3-2 in NCAA Regional to Close out 2008 Campaign
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The 25th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team had its hopes of reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third-consecutive year stripped away as the Ducks fell to SUNY Fredonia in the semifinals of the NCAA New York Regional Championship Friday night in Schenectady, N.Y. Senior outside hitter Melanie Volk had a season-high 20 kills as she added 17 digs and a block assist. With tonight’s loss, the Ducks had their 24-match win-streak broken as they finished the 2008 season with an overall mark of 33-5.
