Women's Volleyball Stays Unbeaten with 3-1 Win over NJCU

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 5, 2007) – Junior outside hitter Melanie Volk posted 15 kills, 13 digs, and two blocks as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team increased its overall record to 5-0 with a win over New Jersey City University on Wednesday at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. The American Volleyball Coaches Association national match of the week started off with the Ducks winning two games (30-15, 30, 21) to be shutdown in the third (26-30), then recovered to win the match in the fourth game (30-18).

Junior middle blocker Summer Hamilton registered 14 kills, two blocks and one dig. Junior middle blocker Jessica Gardner accumulated 11 kills on 18 attempts with four blocks, three digs along with three service aces. The Ducks received a strong showing from junior Melissa Rhode and freshman Sara Budar as they each amassed 26 assists. Rhode also recorded seven kills and nine digs. Senior outside hitter Dawn Herring chipped in with 16 digs and three service aces.

Senior middle hitter Lizzelle Cintron recorded her 2,297 career kill against the Ducks-earning herself the fifth spot in Division III NCAA history for most career kills. In tonight’s loss to the 23rd -ranked Ducks, Cintron posted 22 kills, bringing her total career to 2,307 kills. However, this is the third time (second against Stevens) where she has hit less than .200 percent (.186) in a match. 

Stevens will take on 25th-ranked United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday in New London, Conn.
