HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 12, 2013) – March is National Athletic Training month and the Stevens Institute of Technology Athletic Department is honoring all the members of its Athletic Training staff.

"Every Body Needs an Athletic Trainer" is the theme for this 2013 National Athletic Training Month.  Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic conditions.  Athletic Trainers work under the direction of physicians, and are well-known, recognized, qualified health care professionals. They work to improve patient functional and physical outcomes, and specialize in patient education to prevent injury and re-injury, which reduces rehabilitative and other health care costs

The statutory title of “Athletic Trainer” is a misnomer but is derived from the profession's historical roots which began in the early 20th century. Athletic trainers provide medical services to all types of people – not just athletes participating in sports – and do not train people as personal or fitness trainers do. However, the profession continues to embrace its proud culture and history by retaining the title. In other countries, athletic therapist and physiotherapist are similar titles. National Athletic Training Association (NATA) represents more than 35,000 members in the U.S. and internationally, and there are about 40,000 Athletic Trainers  practicing nationally. NATA represents students in 325 accredited collegiate academic programs.

At Stevens we have three full time Certified Athletic Trainers, and one graduate student from Seton Hall's Masters level Athletic Training program that work with all 26 varsity sports and 500-plus Duck student-athletes on campus.

“Simply put, we could not have an intercollegiate athletic program without our athletic training staff," Stevens' Director of Athletics Russell Rogers (Branchburg, N.J.) said. "They constantly go above and beyond the normal call of duty and always with the best interest of the student-athletes in mind. Not only do our athletic trainers oversee the health and safety of our athletes, they also serve as mentors and as a resource on a variety of topics for students and staff alike.”

Please help celebrate National Athletic Training Month by educating those around you on the profession. Below are several links to the profession in the media, along with the National Athletic Training Association web page for more information.
