Wrestling Rolls to Win over No. 15 TCNJ in Home-Opener

Post-Match Interview - Joe Favia

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 12, 2014)
– The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team rolled to a 30-10 win over 15th-ranked and in-state rival The College of New Jersey Wednesday night in front of a huge crowd at the Canavan Arena.

Sophomore Rob Murray started the match with a major decision over freshman James Goldschmidt, outscoring his opponent 6-0 in the second period before winning, 13-1.

After a loss at 133 tied the match at four, the Ducks ran off three-straight wins to take a commanding 17-4 lead that was never threatened. Junior Ryan Wilson took a 14-1 major at 141 thanks to a dominating second period, and sophomore Frederick Perrine picked up six team points with a win by fall at 149. Perrine pinned sophomore Billy Reardon just 47 seconds into their bout. Rookie Zach Wilhelm took the victory at 157, earning a hard-fought decision to close the Ducks spurt.

Stevens dropped its bout at 165 before senior Zach Bass shutout sophomore Chris Serpico, 6-0, extending the hosts lead to 20-7, and freshman AJ Kowal picked up the Ducks' second pinfall victory late in his match at 184 against freshman Kyle Lynch.

The Ducks' final victory of the bout came in the heavyweight matchup as senior standout Chris Florek earned a 14-6 major over sophomore Patrick Schnider. Like the previous majors, Florek dominated the second period to create separation.

In all, the Ducks won 7-of-10 bouts, earning two falls and three major decisions.

The win is the third in program history for Stevens over the Lions and second in as many years. Prior to the match, Stevens honored former TCNJ Head Coach Dave Icenhower who passed away in October after a long battle with cancer. Icenhower guided the Lions to five national titles and under his direction 124 student-athletes earned All-America honors, including 20 national champs.

The Ducks will return to action at the East Stroudsburg University Invitational Sunday. Visit www.stevensducks.com for the latest on Stevens wrestling.
