HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 27, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team tallied two victories on Saturday night over Empire 8 Conference foe Utica College at Dobbelaar Field. Stevens walked-off with a 5-4 victory in extra innings in Game One and then blew out Utica, 10-2 in the night cap to complete the sweep. The Ducks are now 21-16 overall this season with three regular season games to play.
Game One: Stevens 5, Utica 4 (8 innings)
Junior
Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) ended the opener on a walk-off single to centerfield with the bases loaded to lift Stevens in extra innings, 5-4. Freshmen
Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and
Jonathan Toro (Sanford, Fla.) both reached in the bottom of the eighth on hit by pitches and then junior
Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) singled to fill the bases for Allen.
The Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings but had to fight back to force extras after Utica scored three runs of its own in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
Stevens scratched out two runs in the third inning after Allen drove in Toro on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded for the first run and then sophomore
Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled in Lowenstein for the second run of the frame.
In the fourth, Toro drove in sophomore
Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) with a hard-hit groundball that rolled through the left-centerfield gap for the third run of the ballgame for Stevens.
Utica went hitless through the first four innings but its offense woke up in the fifth to knot the game at 3-3. A triple to rightfield led off the inning and the next batter drove in the run on an RBI groundout. After a single and walk loaded the bases, two runs crossed the plate without the benefit of a hit.
The Pioneers took the lead in the sixth after two consecutive singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Another single brought the go-ahead run home; Stevens turned a double play to get out of the inning.
In the Stevens half of the seventh, senior
Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) picked up the tying RBI by way of a bases loaded walk that pushed freshman
Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) across the plate.
Lowenstein, Mannello, Hennelly and Yano each recorded two hits, while Allen drove in two runs. Yano also stole a base and laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Sophomore starter
Matt Buccheri (Little Silver, N.J.) kept the Utica off balance for most of his seven-inning outing but did not factor into the decision. Buccheri allowed five hits and walked four with four earned runs and three strikeouts. Junior
Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) picked up the victory by striking out two batters in his only inning of relief.
Game Two: Stevens 10, Utica 2
Sophomore
Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) punched out seven Pioneers in six innings pitched for his third victory of the season. Boardman carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning where both hits and runs were tallied for Utica. Through 41.1 innings pitched this season, the righty holds a paltry 1.96 earned run average.
Freshman
Bridger Cohen (Chester, N.J.) tossed the final inning in the game and struck out one hitter.
The Ducks wasted no time to put the night cap out of reach as they scored eight of their 10 runs in the first and second innings. Stevens scored three runs in the first and five more in the second by way of seven hits.
Allen, Courter and senior
Michael Donovan (Frisco, Texas) combined to drive in six of the eight runs in the two frames. Donovan batted 2-for-4 in Game Two with three RBI, while Allen was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and two RBI. Courter walked twice with two RBI in one official at bat.
Sophomores
Pete Prontnicki (Edison, N.J.) and
Matt O'Brien (Goffstown, N.H.) both doubled and scored off the bench for Stevens.
Both teams will square off for another doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12 p.m. The Ducks wrap up their regular season with a nine-inning affair against NJCU on May 1 in Hoboken at 8 p.m.
